Mumbai.Between April and June 2025, India’s smartphone market saw an 8 percent increase in sales compared to the same period last year, according to a Cybermedia Research (CMR) report. This growth is largely driven by the rising demand for 5G smartphones, which now hold 87 percent of the total market share, up 20 percent from last year.

Sharp jump in budget 5G segment

The most significant growth came from affordable 5G smartphones priced between ₹8,000 and ₹10,000, with sales surging by 600 percent year-on-year. Devices in the ₹10,000 to ₹13,000 range also saw a 138 percent increase. Brands like Xiaomi and Realme recorded strong gains in this segment, catering to customers looking for budget-friendly 5G options.

Vivo leads, Samsung second

In overall smartphone sales, Vivo maintained the top position with a 19 percent market share. Samsung followed in second place with 16 percent. Oppo and Xiaomi shared the third and fourth spots, each with 13 percent of the market. Motorola achieved an 81 percent sales growth, while Nothing saw a remarkable 190 percent jump. In contrast, OnePlus sales dropped by 21 percent and Xiaomi’s total sales fell by 25 percent.

Apple tops premium market

In the premium segment, defined as smartphones priced above ₹50,000, Apple led the market. The launch of the iPhone 16 series helped the company achieve a 7 percent overall market share and a 54 percent growth within the premium category. OnePlus, which previously dominated this segment, dropped to tenth place with a 2.7 percent share.

Decline in feature phone sales

Feature phone sales continued to fall as more people switched to affordable smartphones. The 2G feature phone segment shrank by 15 percent, while 4G feature phone sales dropped by 31 percent. Analysts attribute this decline to the growing availability of low-cost 5G devices and increased smartphone adoption in rural and semi-urban areas.
