Mumbai.Air India is set to reduce up to 22% of its domestic flight operations between June and August as rising fuel prices continue to strain airline finances. The decision comes at a time when the carrier has already scaled down nearly 27% of its international services, signalling deep pressure on operational costs across its network. Sources quoted by PTI said the airline is temporarily cutting frequencies on select domestic routes to balance expenses and demand during the peak summer period.
Pressure grows on airline operations
Air India currently operates nearly 4,400 weekly flights, including around 3,600 domestic and 800 international services. The airline said the latest move is part of a broader operational review aimed at managing soaring aviation turbine fuel costs.
In its official statement issued on Wednesday, the airline said:
- Domestic frequencies on selected routes will be reduced by 20-22%
- International operations have already been cut by nearly 27%
- The revised schedule will remain effective between June and August
- Operations may be restored once conditions improve
The airline described the move as a “temporary rationalisation” of services.
Fuel prices trigger financial strain
The aviation sector has been battling sharp increases in fuel prices over the past few months due to global crude oil volatility, supply disruptions and geopolitical tensions. Aviation turbine fuel remains one of the biggest operational expenses for airlines, especially for carriers operating large domestic and international networks.
Industry experts say fuel expenses alone can account for almost 35-40% of an airline’s total operating cost. This has forced several carriers worldwide to either reduce flights, increase ticket fares or suspend less profitable routes.
Air India said it would continue monitoring market conditions before taking further decisions on restoring services.
Passengers to get alternate support
The airline has assured passengers affected by schedule changes that assistance will be provided through multiple options. Travellers are expected to receive advance communication regarding any revision in flight timings or cancellations.
Passengers affected by the revised schedule will get:
- Re-accommodation on alternative flights
- Complimentary date change facility
- Full refunds wherever applicable
The airline said customer support teams are already working on revised travel arrangements for impacted flyers.
Tata Group airline faces transition phase
The reduction in flights comes during a crucial transformation period for Air India under the ownership of the Tata Group. The airline is currently undergoing fleet modernisation, operational restructuring and service upgrades while also trying to improve profitability.
Aviation analysts believe the current fuel crisis may slow down expansion plans for many carriers in the short term. However, they say temporary cuts are being seen as a practical measure to protect long-term stability.
Air India maintained that the reductions are temporary and normal operations may resume once fuel prices and operating conditions stabilise. The airline added that it remains focused on balancing customer convenience with financial sustainability during this difficult phase.
