Winning Bizness Desk

Mumbai.Tata Group-owned Air India has achieved a major operational milestone by emerging as the world's fourth most punctual airline, according to the latest June 2026 report by aviation analytics firm Cirium. The airline recorded an on-time arrival performance of 86.85%, meaning nearly 87 out of every 100 flights reached their destination within the globally accepted time window. The achievement places Air India ahead of several leading international carriers, including Singapore Airlines and Emirates, reflecting significant improvements in its operational efficiency as the airline continues its multi-year transformation under the Tata Group.

Operational gains reflect transformation strategy

Air India operated 15,135 flights during June and also posted an on-time departure rate of 86.23%. Under aviation industry standards, a flight is considered on time if it departs or arrives within 15 minutes of its scheduled timing. The airline also reported an impressive completion factor of 99.7%, indicating that almost every scheduled flight during the month was successfully operated without cancellation. Together, these indicators underline a sharp improvement in schedule reliability across both domestic and international operations.

Key June performance highlights:

  • Global on-time arrival rate: 86.85%
  • On-time departure rate: 86.23%
  • Total flights operated: 15,135
  • Completion factor: 99.7%
  • Nearly 87 out of every 100 flights reached on schedule
  • Only three airlines ranked ahead globally

According to Cirium's global rankings, Saudi Arabia's Saudia secured the top position with an on-time performance of 92.38%, followed by Korean Air at 88.56% and Aeromexico at 86.94%. Air India narrowly followed in fourth place with 86.85%, while outperforming several globally renowned carriers.

    The top ten rankings included:

    • Saudia
    • Korean Air
    • Aeromexico
    • Air India
    • Singapore Airlines
    • WestJet
    • Emirates
    • Turkish Airlines
    • SAS
    • Qatar Airways
    • In the Asia-Pacific rankings, Air India finished fourth, trailing Jeju Air, Korean Air and Scoot, while moving ahead of Singapore Airlines and India's largest airline, IndiGo.

      Investments strengthen operational resilience

Air India attributed the improved rankings to sustained investments in operational resilience, network planning and stronger execution across its domestic and international network. The airline said its focus on schedule integrity and operational reliability has begun delivering measurable results as part of its ongoing transformation programme. The carrier has been redesigning several operational processes while strengthening fleet availability, route planning and airport coordination to improve passenger experience and minimise disruptions.

Fleet expansion supports future growth plans

The airline said it inducted three Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft into its fleet during the past six months. Several more Boeing 787-9s and Airbus A350-1000 aircraft are expected to join the fleet later this year. In addition, two refurbished Boeing 787-8 aircraft with upgraded interiors have returned to service, while three more widebody aircraft are currently undergoing refurbishment in the United States.

      Fleet development roadmap:

      • Three Boeing 787-9 aircraft added
      • More Boeing 787-9 and Airbus A350-1000 deliveries expected
      • Two upgraded Boeing 787-8 aircraft back in service
      • Three additional aircraft under refurbishment
      • More than half of the widebody fleet expected to feature new or upgraded interiors by the end of 2026
      • Airport congestion remains major challenge

Despite the operational gains, Air India acknowledged that congestion at Delhi and Mumbai airports continues to pose significant challenges. Heavy air traffic and Air Traffic Control (ATC) restrictions at the country's two busiest aviation hubs often trigger delays that ripple across the airline's network. The carrier said improving punctuality while operating one of India's largest hub-and-spoke networks remains a complex task.

Separately, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), which measures on-time performance across ten major Indian airports, has so far released data only up to May 2026. According to those figures, the Air India Group ranked third domestically with a 74.5% on-time performance, behind IndiGo and Akasa Air. Chennai recorded the airline's best punctuality at 89.5%, while Lucknow registered its weakest performance at 62.4%. Air India's latest global ranking, however, signals that its operational improvements are gathering pace and strengthening its position among the world's leading full-service airlines.
