Air Travel Costs Set to Rise as Mumbai and Delhi Airports Propose Significant Fee Hikes

Winning Bizness Desk

Mumbai. Air travelers passing through Mumbai and Delhi airports may soon face increased expenses, as both airports have proposed substantial hikes in User Development Fees (UDF). These fees, charged to passengers for the use of airport facilities, are set to rise significantly if approved, potentially leading to higher ticket prices.

Mumbai Airport's Proposed UDF Increase

Mumbai Airport has submitted a proposal to the government to implement a UDF of ₹325 for domestic passengers. For international travelers, the current UDF of ₹187 is proposed to increase to ₹650. This move aims to generate additional revenue for infrastructure development and enhanced passenger services.

Delhi Airport's Tiered UDF Structure

Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), the operator of Delhi Airport, has proposed a tiered UDF structure based on peak and off-peak hours. Between April 2025 and March 2026, departing passengers would be charged ₹405 during off-peak hours and ₹610 during peak hours. Arriving passengers would face fees of ₹140 during off-peak hours and ₹210 during peak hours. International flight charges are expected to be higher, reflecting the additional services provided.

Impact on Airfares

UDFs are typically included in the cost of airline tickets, similar to taxes and fuel surcharges. When such fees are implemented or increased, airlines usually pass these costs onto passengers by incorporating them into ticket prices. Consequently, travelers using Mumbai and Delhi airports may experience higher airfares if the proposed UDF hikes are approved.

Purpose of the UDF

The UDF is intended to fund the development and maintenance of airport infrastructure and to enhance passenger amenities. The additional revenue generated from the increased UDF would support ongoing and future projects aimed at improving the overall passenger experience at these major airports.
