Mumbai.Apple usually launches four updated iPhone models every September, but the company appears set for a major shift in strategy this year. Reports suggest that the iPhone 18 base model may not arrive as scheduled, marking a rare break from Apple’s annual product cycle. Instead, the tech giant is likely to prioritise premium and experimental devices as it looks to manage rising production costs and protect profit margins.
Base iPhone 18 launch likely pushed back
According to a report by Japan-based Nikkei Asia, Apple is unlikely to launch the standard iPhone 18 during its annual event in 2026. The company may postpone the base model’s release until the first half of 2027. This would mean that Apple’s September 2026 event could feature only high-end variants, a move aimed at streamlining resources and focusing on more profitable products.
Rising chip costs drive strategy shift
Reports indicate that increasing prices of memory chips and other key materials are the main reasons behind this decision. Apple is reportedly looking to optimise its supply chain and channel investments into devices that generate higher revenue. Industry watchers say this approach allows Apple to absorb higher component costs without significantly hurting margins. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo have also hinted that Apple may skip a full iPhone 18 rollout this year, instead introducing an iPhone 18e in early 2027.
Focus shifts to foldable iPhone production
A major factor behind the reshuffle is Apple’s long-awaited foldable iPhone. Developing a foldable device requires complex industrial processes and new materials, making production both expensive and technically demanding. Apple is keen to avoid manufacturing issues during mass production and is therefore concentrating its efforts on fewer, high-value models. As a result, the September event may showcase only select devices, including
- iPhone 18 Pro
- iPhone 18 Pro Max
- Apple’s first foldable iPhone
Expected upgrades despite possible delay
Despite uncertainty around the launch timeline, several leaks have revealed expected upgrades for the iPhone 18 series. These include improvements aimed at boosting performance while keeping costs in check. Key leaked features include
- RAM upgrade from 8GB to 12GB
- Front camera upgrade from 18MP to 24MP
- Simplified camera control button to reduce costs
Apple is reportedly considering removing advanced capacitive touch sensors from the camera control button to help keep the final price competitive.
Multiple models still in development pipeline
According to reports, Apple currently has five new iPhone models in its development pipeline. These include the iPhone Air 2, the standard iPhone 18, and three premium models. However, the shipment timeline for the iPhone Air 2 remains unclear. Experts believe it could be launched alongside the iPhone 19 series in 2027. The iPhone Air 2 is also expected to introduce a second rear camera sensor for the first time.
Industry observers say Apple’s evolving launch strategy reflects a broader shift towards premiumisation, where fewer models generate higher returns. If the reports prove accurate, consumers may see fewer choices in the short term, but more advanced and feature-rich devices in the years ahead.
