Mumbai.Apple is preparing for a major leadership transition, with Tim Cook stepping down as Chief Executive Officer and long-time insider John Ternus taking charge from September 1, 2026. Cook will move into the role of executive chairman, marking the first CEO change at the tech giant in 15 years. The decision has been approved unanimously by the company’s board and is part of a planned succession strategy.
Cook will continue in his current role till the end of August to ensure a smooth handover. Ternus, currently senior vice president of hardware engineering, will also join Apple’s board of directors as he assumes leadership.
Cook era sees record growth and expansion
Tim Cook, who joined Apple in 1998 and became CEO in 2011, leaves behind a legacy of remarkable financial growth and global expansion. Under his leadership, Apple’s market value surged from around 350 billion dollars to nearly 4 trillion dollars.
The company’s annual revenue also saw a massive jump, crossing 400 billion dollars in recent years, driven by strong iPhone sales and a growing services business.
Key launches during Cook’s tenure include:
- Apple Watch
- AirPods
- Vision Pro headset
- AirTag tracking device
- Apple Music service
These products helped Apple deepen its ecosystem and expand beyond smartphones.
John Ternus rises through Apple’s engineering ranks
John Ternus brings over 25 years of experience within Apple and is widely seen as a continuity candidate. He joined the company in 2001 as part of the product design team and has worked closely on major devices including iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch. ([Tbreak Media][2])
He was promoted to vice president of hardware engineering in 2013 and later became senior vice president in 2021. Known for his engineering focus, Ternus has played a key role in shaping Apple’s core hardware strategy.
Before Apple, he worked as a mechanical engineer and holds a degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
Major challenges await new CEO in AI era
As Ternus takes over, he faces a set of pressing challenges that could define Apple’s next decade:
- Apple is seen as lagging behind rivals like Google and Microsoft in artificial intelligence
- Regulatory scrutiny is increasing in the US and Europe over market dominance
- Supply chain shifts away from China need careful execution
- Critics question whether Apple has lost its innovation edge
Analysts believe the company will continue focusing on hardware, while gradually integrating AI into existing products rather than launching entirely new platforms.
Transition period to ensure smooth leadership shift
Cook and Ternus will work closely over the next four months to manage a seamless transition. After stepping down, Cook will focus on global policy engagement and strategic matters as executive chairman.
Cook described leading Apple as the greatest privilege of his life, while expressing confidence in Ternus’s leadership. Ternus, in turn, acknowledged the influence of both Cook and Apple co-founder Steve Jobs in shaping his career.
Board reshuffle and focus on sustainability continues
Alongside the CEO change, Apple’s board will also see adjustments, with Arthur Levinson moving into a lead independent director role. Ternus will formally join the board from September.
In recent years, Apple has also focused heavily on sustainability and privacy. The company has reduced its carbon footprint significantly and increased the use of recycled materials in its devices.
Even as leadership changes, Apple’s broader direction remains steady:
- Strong focus on hardware innovation
- Gradual push into AI technologies
- Continued emphasis on sustainability and user privacy
The next phase under Ternus will test whether Apple can retain its dominance while adapting to a fast-changing tech landscape.
