Mumbai. Even though the Indian team did not return with the Asia Cup trophy, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly gained nearly 100 crore rupees from the tournament. According to a TOI report, the financial benefit comes from hosting fees and participation fees linked to the T20 World Cup.
India’s Asia Cup victory without a trophy
India defeated Pakistan in the final held on September 28 to win the Asia Cup. However, the team refused to accept the trophy from Mohsin Nawvi as a protest against the Pulwama attack. As a result, the players returned without trophies or medals but celebrated the victory nonetheless.
For the financial year 2025-26, BCCI expects a total income of around 6,700 crore rupees. This is nearly ten times higher than the 666 crore rupees earned in 2017-18. The Asia Cup contribution is part of these projected international tour earnings, reflecting the board’s growing revenue streams.
IPL brand value decline continues
The Indian Premier League (IPL) has seen a drop in its brand valuation for the second consecutive year, now estimated at about 16,000 crore rupees. This shows that while international tournaments like the Asia Cup benefit the board financially, the IPL’s commercial appeal is facing challenges.
Disparity in spending on men’s and women’s cricket
BCCI’s spending on women’s domestic cricket remains significantly lower than for men. Around 96 crore rupees are being allocated for women’s domestic competitions this year, which is only 26 percent of the revenue gained from the Women’s Premier League (WPL) last season. In contrast, men’s domestic cricket spending is nearly 344 crore rupees, highlighting a large disparity.
Overall financial overview and domestic cricket focus
Out of the total expenditure, 111 crore rupees are being spent on the IPL alone. The board lacks an equivalent domestic tournament for women similar to the Ranji Trophy. Despite the Asia Cup and other international earnings, BCCI continues to focus major resources on men’s cricket while women’s cricket remains underfunded.
