Bima-ASBA Rollout from March 1: Premium Payments to Get Simpler

Mumbai. The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) is set to launch Bima Applications Supported by Blocked Amount (Bima-ASBA) on March 1. This new facility aims to simplify premium payments for life and health insurance policyholders. With Bima-ASBA, policyholders can block the required premium amount in their bank accounts, ensuring automatic deduction only when the policy is issued or the premium is due. This process mirrors the IPO application system, where funds are blocked and debited only after share allocation. Additionally, Bima-ASBA transactions will be further streamlined using a UPI One-Time Mandate (OTM), reducing paperwork and making payments seamless.

Making Insurance Payments Hassle-Free

Until now, customers were required to pay the premium upfront, even before their policy was underwritten. If their application was rejected, the insurer had to refund the amount, causing delays and additional documentation. Bima-ASBA eliminates this issue by ensuring that payment is deducted only upon policy issuance. "This change will reduce friction and make purchasing insurance much easier for users," says Aditya Bagarka, Head of Strategy and Innovation at Plum. This initiative is part of a broader effort by the government to make insurance transactions more transparent and consumer-friendly.

How Will Insurers Adapt?

For insurers, implementing Bima-ASBA requires upgrading their payment systems to integrate this new mechanism. They must align with the timelines set by the regulator to ensure a smooth transition. The move is expected to improve operational efficiency and reduce administrative burdens on both insurers and policyholders. By eliminating unnecessary refunds and documentation, companies can enhance customer experience and speed up the insurance purchase process. "Insurers will need to accept ASBA-based payments, and this will gradually become a standard industry practice," adds Bagarka.

A Step Towards a Digital Future

Bima-ASBA is a significant step toward digital transformation in the insurance sector. It aligns with the government’s push for digital financial inclusion and aims to enhance trust among policyholders. By ensuring that premiums are deducted only after approval, the system minimizes financial risks for customers. As the insurance industry embraces technology-driven solutions, Bima-ASBA is expected to set a new benchmark in premium payment convenience. With this rollout, policyholders can look forward to a more efficient, secure, and hassle-free way of managing their insurance payments.
