Mumbai. From January 2026, railway passengers will be able to change the dates of their confirmed train tickets without paying any cancellation fee or extra charges. This announcement was made by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav on October 7, stating that the facility will be available through the IRCTC website and app. However, tickets will be subject to seat availability on the new date, and there is no guarantee of a confirmed seat if availability is limited.
How the new system works with examples
Passengers can modify their travel date online using the same confirmed ticket. For example, if someone has a ticket for November 20 from Delhi to Patna but their plan changes, they can update the date to November 25 using the same ticket. No additional payment is needed for this process. This will eliminate the need to cancel tickets and book a new one, saving both money and time for travelers.
Current rules for changing ticket dates
At present, passengers must cancel their existing ticket to change the travel date. Cancellation charges vary by class. AC First Class and Executive Class tickets incur 240 rupees plus GST, AC 2-tier/First Class 200 rupees plus GST, AC 3-tier/AC Chair Car/AC 3 Economy 180 rupees plus GST, Sleeper Class 120 rupees, and Second Class 60 rupees. Tickets canceled after the chart is prepared receive no refund. There is also no guarantee of getting a confirmed ticket for the new date.
Booking process under the new system
Once a ticket is confirmed, passengers will see a rebooking option online. They can select a new date for the same train and check seat availability. If seats are available, the ticket will be confirmed without cancellation charges. The process will initially be available only online through IRCTC, with offline options to be introduced later.
Limitations of the new system
The new facility will apply only to confirmed tickets. Waiting list tickets will not be eligible for date changes under the new rules. Additionally, while confirmed tickets can be modified, there is no absolute guarantee of confirmation if seats are limited. Any fare difference for the new date will need to be paid by the passenger.
Benefits for travelers
This change will benefit millions of travelers who wish to adjust their travel plans without losing money. The new system simplifies the process and removes the burden of cancellation fees, making train travel more convenient and flexible for passengers.
