Employees Can Withdraw 75 Percent PF Next Day After Job Loss Under New Rules

Mumbai. Now, employees can withdraw up to 75 percent of their provident fund (PF) balance immediately after leaving a job. Earlier, they had to wait for two months before accessing the funds. Additionally, if a person remains unemployed for up to 12 months, they can withdraw 100 percent of their PF balance. This change was announced by the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) following a Central Board of Trustees meeting on October 13. Clarifying confusion, Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya confirmed that the 12-month unemployment condition only applies to full PF withdrawal, not partial withdrawal.

Revised partial withdrawal rules explained

EPFO has simplified its withdrawal rules by reducing 13 complex conditions into three main categories: essential needs like medical treatment, education, and marriage; housing-related expenses; and special circumstances. Under the new framework, employees can withdraw the full balance in their PF account, including both employee and employer contributions. The frequency limits for education and marriage withdrawals have also increased, allowing ten withdrawals for education and five for marriage. The minimum service period required for withdrawals is now uniform at 12 months.

Withdrawal without explanation for special circumstances

Earlier, employees had to provide a reason to withdraw PF under special circumstances such as unemployment, natural disasters, or pandemics, which often caused claims to be rejected. The new rules allow withdrawals in such situations without any explanation, reducing bureaucratic hurdles and ensuring faster access to funds.

Ensuring minimum balance and compound interest benefits

EPFO has set a minimum balance requirement of 25 percent in members’ accounts. This ensures that employees continue earning an 8.25 percent interest rate with the benefit of compound interest. Maintaining this balance helps employees preserve a part of their PF for retirement while still using funds for urgent needs.

Automation and digital settlement improvements

The withdrawal process will now be largely automated, requiring no document submission. Settlement times for final payments have been increased from two months to 12 months, and pension withdrawals from two months to 36 months. This allows members to access funds conveniently without affecting their retirement savings. EPFO has also partnered with India Post Payments Bank to enable pensioners to submit digital life certificates from home free of cost, especially benefiting rural members.

EPFO 3.0 and fund management upgrades

EPFO is implementing the EPFO 3.0 digital transformation framework to modernize its services. Cloud-based technology, mobile applications, and automatic claim settlements will provide faster, transparent, and user-friendly services for over 30 crore members. The EPFO board has also appointed four fund managers for five years to manage its debt portfolio, ensuring secure and diversified investments with better returns for members.
