Mumbai. New car, jeep and van owners will no longer have to go through the KYV or Know Your Vehicle process while getting a Fastag, starting February 1. The National Highways Authority of India has decided to end this additional verification step to reduce delays and repeated documentation faced by vehicle owners. The move applies not only to newly issued Fastags but also brings relief to existing users who were often asked to update KYV details despite having valid vehicle documents. The decision is aimed at making Fastag activation and usage smoother and less time-consuming.
Why the kyv requirement has been removed
According to NHAI, the KYV process has been discontinued to address persistent complaints from road users. Earlier, even after a Fastag was issued and activated, many vehicle owners faced interruptions due to post-issuance verification by banks or authorities. These checks often led to delays in toll payments and, in some cases, Fastags being temporarily blocked. By removing routine KYV, NHAI hopes to eliminate unnecessary hurdles for genuine users and ensure uninterrupted toll transactions on national highways.
Relief for existing fastag users
The new guideline also covers vehicles that already have Fastags affixed to their windscreens. Owners of such vehicles will no longer be required to undergo periodic KYV updates. This means that as long as the Fastag is functioning normally and there are no discrepancies reported, no additional documents will be demanded. The authority believes this will significantly reduce waiting time and confusion among users who were earlier unsure about repeated verification requirements.
Checks only when complaints are raised
NHAI has clarified that KYV has not been abolished entirely but has been made need-based. Verification will now be triggered only under specific circumstances, such as:
- Complaints of misuse of a Fastag
- Cases where a tag is issued incorrectly
- Situations where the Fastag appears loose or improperly fixed
For all other cases, Fastags that are working smoothly will not be subjected to fresh documentation checks. This targeted approach is expected to reduce administrative burden while still allowing authorities to act against irregularities.
Banks to verify vehicles through official portals
Under the revised rules, Fastag-issuing banks have been given a larger role in verification. Before activating a Fastag, banks must now carry out pre-activation validation using official vehicle portal databases. This ensures that vehicle details are verified directly from government records, without involving the customer after issuance.
Key changes in the process include:
- Banks checking vehicle data directly from official portals
- No post-issuance KYV for routine cases
- Faster activation and fewer customer visits
- mprove user confidence in Fastag systems
- Reduce congestion at toll plazas
- Minimise disputes related to Fastag validity
This shift towards digital automation is expected to bring more transparency and speed to the Fastag ecosystem.
Faster toll payments and smoother travel experience
An NHAI official said the reform is aimed at saving time for everyday road users. Many drivers earlier faced problems at toll plazas despite having valid documents, mainly due to pending KYV checks. With this change, toll payments are expected to become more seamless and interruption-free.
In the long run, the authority believes the step will:
Overall, the new rule is expected to make highway travel simpler, quicker and less stressful for millions of vehicle owners across the country.
