Mumbai. In just 35 years since liberalization, India has transitioned from being heavily import-dependent to becoming a major exporter of several products. The country, which once relied on imports for basic goods, is now exporting everything from Apple iPhones to electric vehicles and French fries. This transformation highlights India's growing self-reliance and its emergence as a global manufacturing hub.
French Fries: From Import to Export
In the early 2000s, India imported approximately 5,000 tons of French fries annually. By 2010-11, this figure exceeded 7,800 tons. However, the scenario has drastically changed over the years. In the fiscal year 2023-24, India exported 1.35 lakh tons of French fries, earning nearly ₹1,500 crore in revenue. This shift demonstrates how India has turned its dependency into an opportunity by building domestic manufacturing capabilities.
$12.8 Billion Worth of iPhones Exported
A similar transformation has taken place in the smartphone sector. Once entirely dependent on imported smartphones, India now manufactures a significant portion of the smartphones it consumes. Apple began producing iPhones in India in 2020, and by 2024, the export value of iPhones manufactured in the country reached $12.8 billion. In 2023, this figure stood at $9 billion, marking a 42% growth in iPhone exports in just one year.
EVs and Cars Gaining Global Recognition
India’s Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme has played a pivotal role in boosting exports in the automobile sector. French multinational Citroën began exporting its India-made electric vehicle, the Citroën e-C3 EV, in April 2024. The vehicle has garnered significant demand in multiple countries.
Similarly, India’s largest car manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki India, has found success in exporting its Maruti Fronx to Japan. This vehicle, manufactured in India, began its journey to Suzuki’s home market in August 2024, with 1,600 units exported to Japan in the initial phase.
The Aroma of Indian Coffee Spreads Worldwide
While India has long been known for its tea exports, it is now making a name for itself in coffee exports as well. In 2023-24, India’s coffee exports doubled to $1.29 billion, compared to $719 million in 2020-21. This impressive growth has elevated India to the position of the world’s seventh-largest coffee producer, expanding its presence in global markets.
A Bright Future for Indian Exports
India’s export journey reflects its rapid strides in manufacturing, innovation, and quality standards. Whether it’s tech products, electric vehicles, or agricultural commodities like coffee, India is showcasing its ability to cater to global demands and build a robust presence in international markets. This evolving export landscape is not just a testament to India’s capabilities but also a major contributor to its growing economic clout.
