Gmail turns into personal assistant with AI inbox, smart search and voice-based email discovery tools

Mumbai.Google has rolled out a major update to Gmail, pushing the email platform beyond its traditional role into that of a personal assistant. With the introduction of features such as AI inbox and AI overview, Gmail will now actively help users decide which emails matter most. Instead of simply receiving messages, the inbox will prioritise them based on urgency, relevance and context, aiming to reduce clutter and improve productivity for everyday users.

Gmail uses gemini reasoning for smarter inbox

Google said the new experience is powered by Gemini 3’s reasoning capabilities. Rather than listing emails only by time, Gmail will analyse content, sender importance and user behaviour to suggest what needs attention first. The AI inbox will surface emails linked to deadlines, payments, appointments and frequent contacts, while less urgent messages move down the list. According to Google, this shift from time-based sorting to need-based prioritisation is designed to help users act faster and miss fewer critical emails.

Ask questions to find old emails

Searching old emails is also getting simpler. Users can now type natural language questions into the Gmail search bar instead of relying on keywords or endless scrolling. Questions like “Who sent the flight ticket?” or “What was decided on this project last year?” will fetch direct answers after analysing past emails. This feature uses Gemini’s reasoning to scan mail history and extract precise information. At present, it is available only to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.

Key abilities of the new search system include:

  • Understanding questions written in everyday language
  • Scanning long email histories automatically
  • Delivering clear answers instead of lists of emails
  • Reducing time spent on manual searching

AI overview summarises long email threads

Google has also introduced an AI overview feature inside Gmail, similar to its search engine summaries. Long email threads with multiple participants often make it hard to track earlier messages. AI overview will condense these conversations into short, readable points, helping users quickly understand what has been discussed and what actions are pending, without opening each message individually.

Important emails shown by priority, not time

The AI inbox tool is designed to highlight what truly matters. It identifies priority senders, upcoming deadlines, bills and reminders, placing them at the top of the inbox. Routine or low-priority emails are pushed lower. Google has stressed that the system follows strict privacy and security standards, with AI processing focused only on improving user experience.

Writing help expands, premium tools stay limited

Gmail’s “Help me write” feature has now been made free for all users, allowing AI-assisted drafting of emails. Smart reply has also evolved into suggested reply, which adapts responses based on conversation context and the user’s writing style.

At the same time, some tools remain exclusive:

  • Proofread features with tone and style suggestions
  • Advanced language-based search queries
  • Early access to experimental AI tools

These premium features are currently limited to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, with some functions available only in the US.
