Google unveils smarter AI agents race intensifies as OpenAI faces growing pressure from Gemini platform

Mumbai.Google no longer wants to remain just a search engine company. The tech giant is now pushing aggressively into the consumer artificial intelligence market, aiming to build the same dominance in AI that it once achieved in internet search. With its latest announcements, industry experts believe Google could seriously challenge OpenAI’s lead in the fast-moving AI race.

On May 19, Google introduced a fresh line-up of AI agents powered by its new Gemini 3.5 Flash model. The company also launched advanced AI coding tools designed to compete directly with OpenAI and Anthropic products. The move signals a major shift in how Google sees the future of AI technology.

AI agents continue working after shutdown

Google’s latest focus is no longer limited to chatbots that only answer questions. Instead, the company is building “working AI” systems capable of performing tasks independently, even after users close their phones or laptops.

One of the newly introduced tools, called “Gemini Spark”, can automatically scan emails, organise group trips and handle several digital activities without continuous user input. Google is also adding “information agents” into its search platform. These AI systems will monitor sports tournaments, shopping sales and stock market activity in real time.

Key highlights from Google’s latest AI push:

  • Gemini app already reaches nearly 900 million monthly users
  • New AI coders challenge OpenAI and Anthropic tools
  • AI agents can continue tasks independently
  • Search platform will now feature AI-powered monitoring systems

Some of these tools will work directly inside the Gemini app, while others will become part of Google Search itself. Analysts believe this strategy could increase pressure on OpenAI and its ChatGPT platform.

OpenAI reportedly issued internal code red

Google’s rapid progress in AI had already alarmed competitors months ago. Reports suggest that after the launch of Gemini 3 last November, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman issued a “code red” warning inside the company. The alert reportedly pushed OpenAI teams to speed up work on their own AI coding agents.

However, Google’s latest Gemini 3.5 Flash launch has again raised questions over whether ChatGPT can maintain its early advantage in the AI market.

The growing investor confidence is also visible in the financial market. Google’s parent company, Alphabet Inc., has seen its market value rise sharply from nearly Rs 382 lakh crore in January to around Rs 478 lakh crore now.

Rising AI usage increases computing costs rapidly

Despite the momentum, Google faces major financial and technical challenges. According to CEO Sundar Pichai, the number of AI usage tokens has exploded within a year. Monthly AI token usage has jumped from 480 trillion to nearly 3.2 quadrillion tokens.

This massive rise means the company now requires far greater computing power to run its AI systems efficiently. The increasing demand for chips, electricity and data processing is pushing operational costs higher at a rapid pace.

Industry observers say the AI boom is slowly becoming as much a battle for infrastructure as it is for software innovation.

Advertising may become AI’s biggest business

To balance growing expenses, Google may increasingly bring advertisements into its AI ecosystem. While the Gemini app currently remains ad-free, Google has already started showing advertisements inside AI-generated search responses.

Experts believe this move offers an early glimpse of the future AI economy, where advertising and data businesses may become even larger than the technology itself.

Major financial concerns include:

  • AI computing expenses rising sharply every year
  • Chip and electricity prices continue
