Mumbai. The Ministry of Finance has ratified an 8.25% interest rate on Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) deposits for the financial year 2024–25. This decision, recommended by the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation's (EPFO) Central Board of Trustees in February, ensures that over 70 million EPF subscribers will receive this rate on their deposits.

Impact on EPF Subscribers

With the approved interest rate, an EPF account holding ₹1,00,000 will earn ₹8,250 in interest over the year. Similarly, a balance of ₹5,00,000 will accrue ₹41,250 in interest. These returns are particularly beneficial for salaried individuals planning their retirement savings.

EPF Contribution Structure

Under the EPF scheme, both employees and employers contribute 12% each of the employee's basic salary plus dearness allowance (DA) to the EPF account. From the employer's contribution, 3.67% goes directly into the EPF, while the remaining 8.33% is allocated to the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS). The employee's entire 12% contribution is credited to the EPF account.

Historical Perspective on EPF Interest Rates

The EPF interest rate has seen various changes since its inception. Starting at 3% in 1952, it gradually increased, reaching 6% in 1972 and peaking at 12% between 1989 and 2000. Since then, the rate has generally declined, with recent years stabilizing around 8.25%.

Interest Credit Timeline

While the EPF interest is calculated monthly based on the running balance, it is typically credited to subscribers' accounts at the end of the financial year. Although there might be delays in crediting the interest, the calculation ensures that subscribers receive the full entitled amount without any loss.
