Government Issues Notice to Ola-Uber Over 'Double Pricing' Allegations

Winning Bizness Desk

Mumbai.Ride-hailing giants Ola and Uber find themselves under scrutiny once again, this time for alleged discrepancies in pricing. Over the past few months, both companies have faced criticism from consumers, influencers, and industry observers for their pricing practices, particularly allegations of "double pricing." In light of this, the Indian government has stepped in, with the Department of Consumer Affairs issuing a formal notice to the companies, demanding clarification.

Government Takes Action

The Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution, Prahlad Joshi, took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to share the development. He stated, “It has come to light that there is visible evidence of differential pricing based on the models of mobile phones (iPhone/Android) being used. Accordingly, the Department of Consumer Affairs, via the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), has issued notices to major cab aggregators Ola and Uber, seeking their response.”

The Allegations

The controversy stems from allegations that Ola and Uber’s ride-hailing platforms charge different fares for the same trip, depending on factors such as the type of smartphone being used or even the phone’s battery level. The issue gained traction after a Delhi-based businessman posted a detailed comparison of fares on different devices and battery levels on social media. His findings sparked widespread discussion online, with many users sharing similar experiences.

Prominent influencers also added fuel to the fire, sharing live proof of price discrepancies across devices on their platforms. These claims quickly gained attention, prompting the government to intervene.

Uber’s Denial

In response to the allegations, Uber denied any involvement in discriminatory pricing based on phone type. The company stated that its pricing mechanism does not consider the type of phone a rider is using. Despite this clarification, the issue has continued to escalate, with consumer voices demanding more transparency from both Uber and Ola.

Government Orders Investigation

Following mounting pressure, the central government has now taken formal steps to address the matter. Minister Prahlad Joshi ordered an investigation into the operations of Ola, Uber, and even smaller ride-hailing platforms like Rapido. This investigation will aim to determine the validity of the allegations and ensure compliance with consumer protection laws.

What’s Next?

The notice from the CCPA marks the beginning of a deeper probe into pricing practices by ride-hailing platforms. If found guilty, Ola and Uber could face penalties or be forced to revise their pricing strategies to maintain transparency and fairness.

This development has raised broader questions about the accountability of tech platforms operating in India and their treatment of consumer rights. As the investigation unfolds, all eyes will be on how Ola and Uber respond to the allegations and whether they take steps to restore consumer confidence.
