Mumbai. The appetite for stock market investments in India is reaching new heights, as reflected in the latest data from the National Stock Exchange (NSE). According to NSE, the number of registered investors has surpassed a staggering 110 million, with the last 10 million registrations happening in just five months. This rapid growth highlights the increasing participation of retail investors in the stock market.

Unprecedented Growth in the Last Five Years

Investor registration at NSE has witnessed a remarkable surge, growing 3.6 times over the past five years. When NSE began its operations in 1994, it took 14 years to register its first 10 million investors. The pace picked up significantly thereafter, with the next 10 million registrations taking around seven years. The momentum has continued to build, with subsequent milestones being reached faster each time — 3.5 years for the third 10 million and slightly over a year for the fourth.

One Million Users Joining Every Month

NSE noted that the growth rate in recent years has been extraordinary. Currently, every additional 10 million investors are being added in about six to seven months, with the most recent 10 million registrations achieved in just five months. This trend underscores a shift in investor behavior, with more individuals showing enthusiasm for direct participation in the stock market.

The past year has also been favorable for the Indian stock market, with the benchmark Nifty50 delivering an 8.8% return, while the broader Nifty 500 index showed an impressive growth of 15.2%. For the past nine consecutive years, Indian markets have consistently delivered positive returns, boosting investor confidence further.

Investor Confidence at an All-Time High

Sriram Krishnan, Chief Business Development Officer at NSE, expressed his excitement over this milestone. “Crossing the 110 million registered investors mark on NSE is a testament to the growing trust of Indian investors in the stock market as a reliable means of wealth creation. The addition of over 10 million new investors in just five months demonstrates the rapid adoption of direct investments by retail investors,” he said.

Additionally, the total number of client codes (accounts) registered with the exchange has reached 210 million. These figures include all registrations to date, and it’s worth noting that investors can register with multiple trading members.

A Changing Investment Landscape

The sharp increase in investor participation reflects a transformation in India’s investment culture, driven by greater financial literacy, improved market accessibility, and the rise of digital trading platforms. The stock market’s sustained returns over the years have further solidified its position as a trusted avenue for wealth creation.

As the NSE continues to break records, this growth highlights the broader trend of democratization of investing in India, with individuals from diverse demographics increasingly taking part in the financial markets.
