Mumbai. From August 1, 2025, ICICI Bank savings account holders in metro and urban areas must keep at least Rs 50,000 in their accounts. Falling short will mean paying a penalty.
New limits for all regions
The minimum balance requirement now depends on the branch location. For metro and urban areas, it’s Rs 50,000. Semi-urban areas require Rs 25,000, and rural branches need Rs 10,000.
How this compares to earlier limits
Previously, the limits were much lower — Rs 10,000 in metro/urban, Rs 5,000 in semi-urban, and Rs 2,500 in rural accounts. This is the first change since 2015, and now ICICI has the highest requirement among all Indian banks.
Why this matters for customers
For many customers, keeping Rs 50,000 in a savings account means locking up money that could otherwise be invested or used for expenses. Not meeting the minimum could result in monthly penalties, which vary based on the shortfall.
How to avoid penalties
- Keep track of your monthly average balance using the ICICI mobile app or net banking.
- If you can’t maintain the new balance, consider switching to a zero-balance or basic savings account.
- Link fixed deposits with your account — some banks allow FD balances to count towards minimum requirements.
- Consolidate multiple accounts into one to meet the minimum in a single account.
Alternatives to consider
Public sector banks and smaller private banks often have lower minimum balance rules. Some digital banks also offer zero-balance accounts with no penalty charges. For example, most PSU banks still require between Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 for rural accounts and Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 for urban areas.
