India to Get Its Own Web Browser: Zoho to Develop ‘Made in India’ Browser

Mumbai. India is set to have its own web browser soon, with Chennai-based software company Zoho Corporation taking the lead in its development. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) announced this initiative on March 20. The project stems from the government’s commitment to enhancing data privacy and security for Indian users, reducing dependency on foreign technology.

As part of this initiative, the ministry had launched the "Indian Web Browser Development Challenge", a national competition aimed at identifying the best team to create a secure and efficient indigenous web browser. Zoho Corporation won the first prize, securing funding of ₹1 crore to develop the browser.

Competition and Prize Distribution

The challenge witnessed participation from 58 companies, each competing to develop a browser that meets India's security and privacy standards. Apart from Zoho, two other teams were recognized for their innovative solutions. Team Ping secured second place, winning ₹75 lakh, while Team Ajna came in third, receiving ₹50 lakh. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw handed over the prize money to the winners, emphasizing the significance of innovation emerging from Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.

Minister Vaishnaw also stated that the competition highlighted the immense potential of Indian startups and their ability to compete with global tech giants. The government has allocated ₹3 crore in funding to support the project’s development. Once completed, the browser will undergo security certifications before being made available for public use.

Features of the 'Made in India' Web Browser

The upcoming Indian web browser aims to provide enhanced security, data privacy, and seamless compatibility with various devices. Some key features include:

Data Security: The browser will be monitored by the government, ensuring that Indian users' data remains within the country.

Privacy Compliance: It will adhere to Indian data privacy laws, safeguarding user information.

Cross-Platform Compatibility: The browser will be designed to function across multiple operating systems, including iOS, Windows, and Android.

This initiative comes in response to concerns over foreign dominance in the browser market. Currently, Google Chrome has an 89% market share in India, with over 850 million Indian users. The introduction of an indigenous browser is expected to provide a secure alternative while promoting India's digital self-reliance.

Why India Needs Its Own Browser

Popular web browsers like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Microsoft Edge do not recognize Indian certification agencies in their root store (also known as the trust store), which verifies the security of operating systems and applications. This lack of integration raises security concerns, as India has no direct oversight over how these browsers handle user data.

With India's rapid digital transformation, data security and privacy have become critical issues. The government believes that an indigenous web browser will bridge this gap, ensuring better compliance with national cybersecurity norms. The initiative is also a step towards reducing reliance on American tech giants, which currently dominate India's internet ecosystem.

Zoho Corporation: The Company Behind the Browser

Zoho Corporation, the company entrusted with developing India’s first indigenous web browser, is a Chennai-based technology firm specializing in internet-based software and business tools. Founded in 1996 by Sridhar Vembu and Tony Thomas, the company provides affordable business software solutions, including email services, office productivity tools, and customer relationship management (CRM) systems.

Zoho’s success in the Indian Web Browser Development Challenge reaffirms its position as a leader in the Indian tech industry. The company is now set to create a browser that aligns with national security standards while competing with global players like Google and Microsoft.
