Mumbai. The way India measures inflation and economic growth is set for a major overhaul early next year, as the Centre prepares to roll out new data series for key economic indicators. From February 2026, retail inflation or Consumer Price Index and Gross Domestic Product figures will be released using updated base years, replacing data frameworks that are nearly 14 years old. The move is aimed at making official economic statistics more reflective of present-day consumption patterns and structural changes in the economy.
New data series rollout timeline
From February 2026, GDP and retail inflation numbers will be calculated using new base years, while the Index of Industrial Production will shift to the revised series from May 2026. According to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, preparations for the transition are complete.

Key timelines at a glance:
- GDP and IIP new base year: 2022–23
- Retail inflation new base year: 2024
- CPI and GDP new series launch: February 2026
- IIP new series launch: May 2026
Why updating the base year matters
Currently, GDP and retail inflation are calculated using 2011–12 as the base year, a practice that experts have long argued no longer captures today’s economic realities. In many countries, base years are updated every five years to ensure accuracy. Over the past decade, household spending habits, technology use and service consumption have changed sharply, making older benchmarks less relevant. The revised series is expected to present a more realistic picture of India’s economy and price trends.
Food inflation weightage likely to reduce
One of the most significant changes is expected in the composition of the retail inflation basket. At present, food items carry a heavy weight in CPI calculations. Officials indicate that the new series may reduce the weightage of food and beverages. This reflects rising incomes and a shift in household spending towards services such as education, healthcare and recreation. Giving greater importance to these modern needs is expected to make inflation data more aligned with actual living costs.
IIP revamp to reflect new industries
The Index of Industrial Production, which tracks the performance of manufacturing and mining sectors, will also be updated. From May 2026, the new IIP series will include products that have emerged in recent years while removing items that no longer have significant market demand. This adjustment is intended to better capture the current industrial landscape and production trends.
Policy impact and public relevance
Statistics Ministry Secretary Saurabh Garg has earlier pointed out that improving data quality is crucial as India remains among the fastest-growing major economies. More accurate inflation data will help the Reserve Bank of India take better-informed interest rate decisions. While the changes will not directly affect household budgets, they will influence government policies and welfare schemes. Better GDP data can also strengthen investor confidence in India’s growth story.
At its core, the base year is a reference point used to compare prices over time.
- Prices in the base year are assigned a value of 100
- Later prices are measured against this benchmark
- The base year is chosen to represent a normal economic period, free from extreme events
By updating this reference point, India aims to align its economic measurement tools with present-day realities and global best practices.
