Indian stock markets to trade on budget Sunday February 1 marking rare working weekend event

Winning Bizness Desk

Mumbai.Despite falling on a Sunday, February 1, 2026, will be a full trading day for India’s stock markets, as both the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange remain open for normal business. The exchanges issued official circulars on Saturday, January 17, confirming the decision after receiving directions from the government. The move is aimed at allowing investors to respond instantly to Union Budget announcements, rather than waiting for the next working day.

First budget Sunday trading after nine years

This will be the first time in nine years that Indian stock markets operate on a Sunday for the presentation of the Union Budget. The previous instance was in 2017, when February 1 also fell on a Sunday and trading was permitted. Typically, markets remain closed on weekends, but on rare occasions such as major economic events, exchanges declare a special trading day to manage investor sentiment and market stability.

All segments to operate at normal timings

According to details shared by BSE and NSE, trading on February 1 will take place across all segments without any change in market hours. This includes equity, equity derivatives, currency derivatives and commodities. The exchanges have clarified that the Sunday session will follow the same schedule as a regular weekday.

Key trading segments active on February 1 include:

  • Equity and equity derivatives markets
  • Currency trading platforms
  • Commodity segments across exchanges
  • Normal opening and closing hours unchanged

Why markets will stay open on Sunday

Union Budgets usually carry major announcements related to tax slabs, capital expenditure and sector-specific incentives. If markets remained closed on Sunday, investors would be forced to wait until Monday to react. This delay often leads to sharp and volatile movements when trading resumes.

By keeping markets open on budget day:

  • Investors can react in real time
  • Price discovery happens immediately
  • Risk of extreme Monday volatility reduces

No change in settlement and clearing process

Exchanges have also clarified that while trading will take place on Sunday, there will be no changes to the existing clearing and settlement cycle. The special trading day will remain the only exception in the February 2026 holiday calendar. Traders and brokers have been advised to ensure system readiness and sufficient funds in advance.

Important points traders should note:

  • Settlement cycle remains unchanged
  • Sunday trading is a one-day exception
  • Systems and funds must be pre-arranged

Rare but significant market exception

Working Sundays for the stock market are extremely uncommon and are reserved for events with wide economic impact. With the 2026 Union Budget expected to outline key fiscal priorities, opening markets on the same day reflects the growing emphasis on transparency and immediate investor participation in policy-driven market movements.
