Mumbai.India's economy is gaining increasing global trust, as recent data reveals that nearly ₹5 lakh crore of foreign investment has come into the country in the first 8 months of the current fiscal year. This is a 17% increase compared to the same period last year. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman shared these figures while presenting the Economic Survey in Parliament on Friday.
The Finance Minister informed the Parliament that foreign direct investment (FDI) has grown in the country during the current fiscal year. From April to November 2024-25, FDI increased by 17.2%, reaching $55.6 billion (₹4.81 lakh crore), compared to $47.2 billion in the same period of the previous fiscal year (2023-24). The survey highlighted that global factors like inflationary pressure, rising interest rates in developed economies, and geopolitical tensions have caused short-term instability in global markets. However, the long-term outlook for FDI in India remains favorable.
Decline Compared to Two Years Ago
According to the Economic Survey, there are signs of improvement in FDI flows in the first eight months of fiscal year 2024-25. However, there has been a reduction in net FDI flows compared to April-November 2023 due to an increase in remittances and disinvestment. Since April 2000, India’s FDI flow has crossed the $1 trillion mark, further solidifying the country’s position as a safe and significant global investment destination.
Which Sector Attracted the Most FDI?
The survey revealed that the services sector attracted the largest share of FDI. In the first half of fiscal year 2024-25, the services sector accounted for 19.1% of total capital inflow. Other major sectors attracting foreign investment include computer software and hardware (14.1%), trading (9.1%), non-conventional energy (7%), and cement and gypsum products (6.1%). Despite global factors such as inflationary pressures, rising interest rates in developed economies, and geopolitical tensions causing short-term instability, the long-term outlook for FDI in India remains strong.
India’s Expanding Market is Crucial
The report emphasized that India’s robust economic fundamentals, ongoing structural reforms, and a growing consumer market make it an attractive destination for foreign investment. The survey also addressed concerns about the decline in FDI, stating that the analysis reveals global FDI flows were disrupted due to economic uncertainties, geopolitical tensions, and rising borrowing costs. However, alongside the growth in gross FDI inflows, there was also an increase in outflows as investors sent more money back to their home countries.
The reason for this is India’s strong stock market, which offers good returns on investments for international companies, further bolstering investor confidence. The survey's findings show that despite global instability, India remains a favorable place for long-term investment. As one of the world’s largest emerging markets, India’s growing economic stature continues to attract foreign investors seeking both security and growth.
In conclusion, the increasing foreign investment into India showcases the world’s growing trust in the country's economic prospects. With the services sector leading the charge, the diverse range of industries attracting investment, and the continued structural reforms, India is positioning itself as one of the most promising destinations for foreign capital. Despite global challenges, the country's strong economic fundamentals and expanding consumer base ensure that it remains an important player in the global investment landscape.
