Mumbai. In December 2024, India’s service sector reached its peak performance over four months, creating numerous job opportunities. The growth was driven by rising demand and an influx of new orders, as revealed by S&P Global. The sector achieved remarkable growth, reaching its highest level in four months, according to survey results analyzed through the Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI).
The HSBC India Services Business Activity Index (PMI) soared to 59.3 in December, surpassing November's 58.4. This represented the fastest growth in four months. A PMI score above 50 indicates expansion, while a score below 50 signals contraction. HSBC economist Ines Lam stated that Indian service companies performed exceptionally well in December. With new orders and robust future planning, the sector is expected to maintain its momentum and continue thriving in the coming months.
Growth in New Orders and Employment
A closer look at the service sector's performance over the past year reveals that growing demand led to an increase in new orders, boosting overall production. This growth prompted companies to expand their workforce significantly, creating numerous job opportunities. Many young professionals secured employment during this period, reflecting the sector’s robust growth.
Slight Increase in Costs but Minimal Impact
Companies participating in the survey reported a marginal rise in expenses related to food, labor, and raw materials. However, this increase was not substantial enough to impede the service sector's growth trajectory.
Manufacturing Sector Slows Down
While the service sector thrived, the manufacturing sector experienced a slowdown, hitting a 12-month low in December. However, the impressive performance of the service sector largely offset this dip, ensuring overall economic stability. The robust growth in the service sector highlights the strength of India’s economy, fueled by new orders and increased production. This upward trend is expected to continue in the months ahead.
In summary, December 2024 was a milestone for India’s service sector, showcasing its resilience and growth potential. It created abundant job opportunities and balanced the economy against manufacturing sector challenges, reinforcing optimism for sustained progress.
