IRCTC Launches New Ticket Booking Website With Faster Checkout, Unified Seat View and Simpler User Experience

Mumbai. The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has rolled out the beta version of its upgraded online ticket booking website, introducing a faster, cleaner and more user-friendly platform for millions of passengers. The new portal, which went live on July 15, aims to simplify train ticket booking by reducing unnecessary steps, displaying seat availability across all travel classes on a single screen and eliminating repeated captcha verification. The beta release will remain open for public feedback before the final version is launched.

The upgrade marks one of the biggest improvements to India's busiest railway ticketing platform in recent years. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had announced the launch timeline during his visit to Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT), Jaipur, last month. Railway officials said passenger feedback collected during the beta phase will help fine-tune the platform before it is made fully operational in the coming weeks.

Smoother booking process for passengers

The redesigned website focuses on improving the overall booking experience instead of merely changing its appearance. Several new features have been introduced to reduce booking time and make navigation easier.

Key improvements include:

  • Seat availability for Sleeper, Third AC, Second AC and other classes now appears together on one screen.
  • The new 'Faster Checkout' feature reduces the number of booking steps.
  • Smart captcha replaces repeated verification during login and booking.
  • Repeat travellers can save passenger details for quicker future bookings.

Officials believe these changes will especially benefit passengers booking tickets during peak demand periods when every second matters.

Beta version invites user feedback

The new portal can be accessed directly through the IRCTC ticket booking website, while users visiting the existing homepage are also being provided a dedicated link to experience the beta version. The Railway Ministry said the objective is to collect real-time feedback from passengers regarding usability, design and booking performance before the nationwide rollout.

Passengers are encouraged to explore the platform, complete bookings and report any issues they encounter. Suggestions received during this phase will help developers improve the portal before its final release.

Major backend overhaul also underway

The website upgrade is being carried out alongside a significant modernisation of the railway's Passenger Reservation System (PRS), which powers ticket bookings across the country. Railway officials said the project involves replacing decades-old backend technology without interrupting live ticket booking services.

Handling such a transition has been one of the biggest technical challenges, as the reservation system continues to process bookings round the clock. The upgraded reservation engine is also expected to become operational soon, further improving speed and reliability.

Platform handles massive daily traffic

Launched in 2002, the IRCTC website has evolved into one of India's busiest online ticketing platforms. The portal currently processes an average of around 1.45 million railway ticket bookings every day, making continuous technological upgrades essential to maintain smooth operations and meet growing demand.

Passenger tips for using the beta website:

  • Log in through the beta version link available on the homepage.
  • Complete a booking to experience the redesigned interface.
  • Share feedback using the website's feedback option.
  • Report payment or seat selection issues with screenshots to help developers fix them before the final rollout.

Railway officials said both the existing and beta portals will continue operating until testing is completed. Once passenger feedback is incorporated and the new reservation engine is fully integrated, the upgraded IRCTC website is expected to be launched for all users within the next few weeks.
