Mumbai. After Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries announced an investment of ₹3.05 lakh crore in Maharashtra, Amazon Web Services (AWS), led by Jeff Bezos, has joined the list of major investors in the state. AWS will invest $8.3 billion (approximately ₹71,800 crore) in Maharashtra by 2030 to expand its cloud computing infrastructure under its AWS Asia-Pacific (Mumbai) region, creating significant employment opportunities.
Focus on Cloud Computing Growth
AWS, the cloud computing subsidiary of Amazon, is intensifying its focus on strengthening its infrastructure in India. This $8.3 billion investment is part of the company’s larger $12.7 billion plan, announced in May 2023. AWS stated that this investment will contribute $15.3 billion to India’s GDP by 2030 and strengthen the local supply chain for data centers.
The investment aligns with Maharashtra’s vision to become the “Data Center World Capital.” The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between AWS and the Maharashtra government was signed during the World Economic Forum in Switzerland. This move highlights AWS’s commitment to fostering innovation and economic growth in the state while creating 81,300 full-time jobs by 2030.
AWS’s Existing Investments in Maharashtra
Between 2016 and 2019, AWS invested over $3.7 billion in cloud computing infrastructure in Maharashtra. With this new round of investment, the company aims to scale up its operations significantly, contributing to Maharashtra's digital and economic transformation.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed optimism, stating, “This collaboration with AWS will strengthen Maharashtra's IT infrastructure and create new opportunities for innovation, economic growth, and employment. We are committed to fostering a favorable environment for data centers to accelerate Maharashtra’s digital future.”
Reliance Industries’ Record Investment
Alongside AWS’s announcement, Reliance Industries signed an MoU with Maharashtra to invest ₹3.05 lakh crore. This massive investment is expected to create over 3 lakh jobs in sectors like new energy, retail, hospitality, and high-tech manufacturing.
Anant Ambani, the non-executive director of Reliance Industries, represented the company at the World Economic Forum. This strategic investment by Reliance aims to position Maharashtra as a hub for sustainable energy and technological innovation.
Maharashtra: A Magnet for Big Investments
With AWS and Reliance Industries committing substantial investments, Maharashtra is emerging as a preferred destination for global corporations. These investments not only bolster the state’s IT and energy sectors but also reflect its potential to drive India’s economic growth.
The combined impact of AWS and Reliance’s investments is expected to generate over 3.8 lakh jobs, providing a significant boost to employment in the state. As Maharashtra positions itself as a data center and innovation hub, these developments will pave the way for a robust digital and economic ecosystem in the region.
