Mumbai. The stock market reached its peak in September 2024, but conditions have since changed drastically. Due to continuous declines, large-cap, mid-cap, and small-cap stocks have all seen significant drops in their valuations.
According to Samco Securities, 272 out of the top 500 companies have witnessed a decline of more than 20% from their September 2024 levels. This means that more than half of the stock market is experiencing substantial losses. Buying stocks during a downturn can be a smart move, as these stocks may generate significant returns when the market rebounds.
Long-term investors may find the current levels an attractive entry point
The report further indicates that risks of additional declines persist, but long-term investors may find the current levels an attractive entry point for strategic investments. During this period, Adani Green Energy has dropped by 63%, and Adani Energy Solutions has fallen by 54%. Other major stocks, including BHEL, Trent, ABB, GAIL, Samvardhana Motherson, Airtel, and BPCL, have also witnessed sharp declines.
Analysts state that the recent downturn has erased approximately ₹8.5 trillion from the Indian stock market. The Sensex’s price-to-earnings ratio has dropped to 21x, and if Zomato is excluded, it could be even lower.
Small-cap and mid-cap indices have lost ₹4.6 trillion
The small-cap and mid-cap indices have lost ₹4.6 trillion in market capitalization since their peak in September 2024. However, due to this downturn, some excellent companies’ stocks are now available at lower prices, which could lead to increased buying activity in the coming days.
