Mumbai. Maruti Suzuki India, the country’s largest carmaker, has become the world’s 8th most valuable automobile company with a market capitalisation of $57.6 billion, or ₹5.10 lakh crore. The company has overtaken global auto majors such as Ford, General Motors, and Volkswagen, and has also surpassed its Japanese parent Suzuki Motor Corp, which holds a valuation of ₹2.57 lakh crore.

Tesla remains at the top

Maruti Suzuki currently controls more than 60 percent of India’s small car market. The company has gained momentum from the newly implemented GST reforms that reduced tax rates on small cars from September 22. This prompted Maruti to slash prices across popular models, making them more affordable for customers.

Price cuts across models

Senior Executive Officer (Marketing and Sales) Partho Banerjee said prices were reduced by ₹1.30 lakh on some cars. Alto K10 saw a reduction of 10.6–20 percent, S-Presso by 12.6–24 percent, Celerio by 8.6–17 percent, and Wagon R by 8.7–14 percent. Banerjee described the move as a festive season double benefit for customers.

Surge in bookings and deliveries

The GST-driven price cut led to a sharp rise in bookings. Maruti is now receiving around 15,000 bookings daily. On the first day of Navratri, September 22, the company delivered 30,000 cars in a single day, highlighting the strong demand for small cars.

Shares surge 25 percent

Since Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the new GST reforms on August 15, Maruti’s shares have risen by 25 percent. The stock, which stood at ₹12,936 on August 14, climbed to ₹16,236 by September 25. During the same period, the Nifty Auto Index grew 11 percent, but Maruti outperformed the sector significantly.

Strategy behind the success

Maruti Suzuki’s rise is attributed to its strong grip on the small car market and its ability to align with policy reforms. The festive season demand and customer-friendly pricing strategies have strengthened its position further. Industry analysts say this achievement not only boosts Maruti’s brand but also showcases the potential of Indian automakers to compete globally with the right strategies and policies.
