From failed app to social commerce giant

Meesho’s journey began in 2015 when friends Vidit Aatrey and Sanjeev Barnwal quit high-paying jobs to start up. Their first venture, a hyperlocal fashion delivery app called Fashioner, failed. A later digital storefront model worked but did not scale. The real breakthrough came from a simple observation during ground research. Women in small towns of Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh were running WhatsApp boutiques, selling clothes without shops or websites. Meesho positioned itself as a one-stop solution for such sellers. Named after “My Shop,” the platform empowered small merchants and social sellers, laying the foundation for its rise into a market leader in social commerce.
