Mumbai.Mehli Mistry to step down from Tata Medical Centre Trust as term ends on September 30
Mehli Mistry, a close associate of late industrialist Ratan Tata, will step down from the Tata Medical Centre Trust in Kolkata after his current term ends on September 30.
Mistry informed the Tata Medical Centre chief executive officer about his decision through an email sent on September 15. He also asked the CEO to formally record his decision not to continue in the role.
The email was also sent to Noel Tata, the new chairman of Tata Trusts, and other family trustees.
Mistry’s tenure at Tata Medical Centre ends September 30
Mistry has decided not to seek another term at the trust that oversees Tata Medical Centre in Kolkata. His departure marks another change in his association with institutions linked to the Tata group and Ratan Tata’s charitable and investment interests.
The Tata Medical Centre is a not-for-profit cancer hospital with 436 beds. It provides cancer treatment at affordable costs and caters to patients from different sections of society. The centre’s work extends beyond treatment and includes early detection, prevention and control of cancer, patient care and post-treatment support.
Centre provides affordable cancer care in Kolkata
Tata Medical Centre was established to provide comprehensive cancer care while keeping treatment accessible to patients. Its services cover several stages of cancer management, from detecting the disease at an early stage to treatment and follow-up care.
The centre also focuses on:
- Early detection of cancer
- Prevention and control of the disease
- Treatment and patient management
- Care and support after treatment
Mistry also exits firm handling over ₹1,000 crore
Mistry’s association with other Tata-linked entities has also reduced in recent months. Before deciding to leave the Tata Medical Centre Trust, he had resigned as a director of RNT Associates. RNT Associates manages Ratan Tata’s personal investments in companies including Ola Electric and Urban Company. The company’s overall portfolio is valued at more than ₹1,000 crore. Mistry had also stepped down from two other charitable trusts associated with Ratan Tata before leaving RNT Associates.
Changes followed implementation of Ratan Tata’s will
The changes came after the implementation of Ratan Tata’s will and the transfer of responsibilities at his charitable trusts. Following the process, management of the relevant entities was handed over to new trustees. Mistry had been closely associated with Ratan Tata and several institutions connected with his philanthropic activities. His exits have therefore marked a gradual change in the group of people managing responsibilities associated with the late industrialist’s charitable and investment interests.
Mistry left two key Tata Trusts in October 2025
Mistry had already stepped down from the two principal Tata charitable trusts — the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the Sir Ratan Tata Trust — in October 2025. The issue had earlier involved a proposal to retain him as a trustee for life. However, he did not receive approval to continue in the position. During that period, Mistry had approached the charity commissioner, seeking an opportunity to present his side of the matter.
He later chose to close the issue himself.
He cited Ratan Tata’s principles while ending dispute
Mistry subsequently said he did not want to drag Tata Trusts into any controversy and wanted to follow the principles associated with Ratan Tata and his decision brought the matter to an end without further escalation.
The episode also came at a time when the Tata Trusts were undergoing changes following Ratan Tata’s death and the appointment of new leadership.
Mistry remains linked to Tata education trust
Despite his exit from the two principal Tata Trusts, Mistry continues to be associated with the Tata Education and Development Trust. The organisation comes under the Sir Ratan Tata Trust. His association with that trust continues even as his role at Tata Medical Centre Trust approaches its formal end.
September 30 marks another key change for Mistry
Mistry’s current term at Tata Medical Centre Trust will officially end on September 30.
After that date, he will no longer hold the position and has made it clear that he will not take up the responsibility again.
His recent exits can be summarised as follows:
- Tata Medical Centre Trust: Term ends September 30, 2026
- RNT Associates: Resigned as director
- Sir Dorabji Tata Trust: Left in October 2025
- Sir Ratan Tata Trust: Left in October 2025
- Tata Education and Development Trust: Continues to be associated with it
