Musk plans world’s largest rocket launch complex, with thousands of Starships set to fly every year

Elon Musk’s SpaceX is planning what could become the world’s largest rocket launch complex in southern Louisiana, with the company expected to invest $100 billion, or around Rs 9.5 lakh crore, in the project. The proposed “Starbase, Louisiana” will become SpaceX’s second Starbase campus and is expected to transform the region into a major hub for high-frequency space launches.

Louisiana site will cover vast area

The new spaceport is planned on Pecan Island across 125,000 acres, an area about eight times larger than Manhattan. Construction is expected to begin in 2029. The site will be used to launch SpaceX’s next-generation Starship rockets as well as AI-based satellites into space.

The project is also expected to create a major economic impact in Louisiana. Governor Jeff Landry said the spaceport would generate more than 3,000 direct jobs in the region, with workers expected to earn an average annual salary of $92,600, or around Rs 88 lakh.

High-paying jobs could reshape local economy

That figure is nearly twice the current average income in Vermilion Parish. Landry described the project as a major step for the state, saying it would bring employment, progress for local communities and greater protection for coastal areas.

The planned campus will be largely self-sustaining, according to SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell. Its facilities are expected to include:

  • Methane production for rocket propellant.
  • An electricity-generation facility for the complex.
  • A deep-water shipping port and vehicle-processing units.
  • A dedicated airport may also be developed.

Thousands of Starship flights planned annually

Shotwell said the facility is being designed to support thousands of Starship flights every year. However, the actual scale of operations will depend on engineering requirements and regulatory approvals.

Unlike SpaceX’s Texas-based Starbase, the Louisiana campus will not manufacture or assemble rockets. Its primary purpose will be rapid, high-frequency launches. Pecan Island’s geographical position is considered suitable for placing satellites into sun-synchronous orbit, particularly those powered by solar energy.

Musk has ambitious satellite plans ahead

The Louisiana spaceport is expected to support two major SpaceX ambitions:

  • Rapid expansion of the Starlink satellite constellation.
  • Deployment of as many as one million AI satellites in space.

What is a sun-synchronous orbit?

A sun-synchronous orbit is a path around Earth in which a satellite passes over locations at nearly the same local solar time. This gives satellites consistent lighting conditions during repeated observations.

The orbit is particularly useful for Earth-observation missions and solar-powered satellites because they can operate under predictable sunlight conditions. For SpaceX, the Louisiana location could therefore provide an important advantage as it seeks to dramatically increase the frequency of satellite launches.

If completed as planned, Starbase, Louisiana would mark a major expansion of SpaceX’s launch infrastructure, shifting part of its focus from rocket production to an industrial-scale launch operation capable of supporting thousands of missions each year.
