Mumbai.Several U.S. government agencies, including NASA, have opposed an email from the Department of Government Efficiency (DoGE) that demands employees account for their work over the past week. The DoGE was established by the Trump administration and is headed by Tesla and SpaceX owner Elon Musk.
NASA managers at various centers have instructed employees not to respond to the email. Under Trump's new administration, DoGE has been tasked with reducing government expenses. As part of this effort, Musk has been given the responsibility to streamline operations and cut costs.
Musk's Directive: Account for Seven Days or Resign
DoGE has issued notices to over 2 million federal employees, asking them to submit a five-point report detailing their work from the past week. The deadline for submission is Monday at 11:59 PM, and employees failing to respond will be considered as having resigned. The notice, sent out on Saturday, has sparked controversy, with critics arguing that such an approach is unreasonable and coercive.
Trump Encourages Musk to Be More Aggressive
Recently, President Donald Trump posted on social media urging Musk to accelerate the restructuring of the federal workforce. In his post, Trump wrote, "Elon is doing a great job, but I want him to be even more aggressive. Remember, we have to save a country and make it greater than ever!" In response, Musk replied, "Will do, Mr. President!" and soon after, the controversial email was sent to federal employees asking for their work reports.
DoGE’s Savings to Be Returned to Citizens
Speaking at an event in Miami, Trump claimed that DoGE has saved the U.S. government trillions of dollars through its cost-cutting measures. He further announced plans to return 20% of these savings, approximately $400 billion, to American citizens. This means each American household could receive around $5,000. Additionally, another 20% of the savings will be used to reduce government debt. However, Trump did not specify how the remaining 60% of the savings would be allocated.
DoGE Claims $55 Billion in Savings Amid Scrutiny
Under Musk’s leadership, DoGE has aggressively reduced government spending by eliminating jobs, selling government-owned assets, and shutting down various programs. According to DoGE, these efforts have saved $55 billion (approximately 4.7 trillion rupees) since January 20. However, critics have questioned these claims, arguing that DoGE has failed to provide concrete data to substantiate its figures. The lack of transparency has fueled further debate over the true impact of the department's measures.
