New financial rules to take effect from September 1, changes to impact daily expenses

Winning Bizness Desk

Mumbai. From September 1, 2025, several new rules connected directly with household budgets and daily spending will come into force. These include changes in credit card usage, jewellery purchases, postal services, and fuel pricing. The government and financial institutions regularly bring in updates at the start of each month, and this time too, the changes are set to touch the pockets of ordinary people. Here is a detailed look at what is changing from the coming month.

Credit card reward points to change

The country’s largest public sector bank, the State Bank of India, has announced that some of its credit card rules will change from September 1. From the new month, reward points will no longer be given on spending made on digital gaming platforms, certain merchants, and government-related transactions. This decision is expected to have a direct effect on customers who regularly use their credit cards for these categories. Many users may find their reward point collection slowing down, which could also change how they plan their digital and government payments.

Silver jewellery hallmarking to be introduced

The central government is moving ahead with an important step in the jewellery sector. From September 1, silver jewellery will be brought under hallmarking rules for purity. At the initial stage, the rule will be voluntary, which means customers will have a choice between buying hallmarked jewellery or jewellery without the hallmark. While this offers flexibility, experts believe buyers will slowly prefer hallmarked products for better assurance of purity, just like what has already happened in the case of gold jewellery.

LPG cylinder prices to be revised

Another monthly change that families closely track is the price of LPG cylinders. On the first day of every month, oil companies announce the revised rates of domestic and commercial LPG. Sometimes the prices rise, sometimes they stay unchanged, and in a few months, they fall. For September 1, 2025, the rates are again due for revision. The decision will determine whether households will have to spend more on cooking fuel or if they will get some relief this month.

Post office services to be restructured

The postal department is also set for a big change starting September. Registered post, one of its long-running services, will now be merged with speed post. This means from September 1, if a person wants to send a registered post, it will automatically be delivered through speed post. The separate service of registered post will no longer exist. All categories of postal items will now fall under speed post, which is seen as a move to simplify and speed up postal operations.

CNG and PNG gas rates may change

Like LPG, the rates of CNG and PNG are also reviewed every month. In recent months, their prices were kept steady, giving some relief to households and vehicle owners. But in September 2025, a change in prices is again possible. This will directly impact those who use piped gas in their kitchens and motorists running vehicles on CNG. Even a small upward revision could add to monthly expenses.
