Mumbai.NSE shares list 0.84% above issue price at ₹1,800, later climb over 5% to ₹1,876
Shares of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) made a muted debut on the stock market on September 24, listing at ₹1,800, just ₹15 or 0.84% above the issue price of ₹1,785.
The stock, however, gained momentum soon after listing as buying interest pushed it up 5.14% to the day’s high of ₹1,876.
The listing marks NSE’s entry into the public markets as a publicly traded company. Its shares are being traded on the BSE, rather than on NSE’s own platform.
More than 34 lakh retail investors receive shares
During the listing ceremony, NSE managing director and CEO Ashish Kumar Chauhan said more than 34 lakh retail investors had been allotted shares in the IPO.
Chauhan thanked investors for the confidence they had placed in NSE. The large retail participation came despite the IPO being open at a price band of ₹1,700-₹1,785 per share.
The ₹22,562-crore issue was entirely an offer for sale (OFS), meaning NSE did not issue any new shares. Existing shareholders sold their holdings through the IPO.
IPO received 5.71 times total subscription
The NSE IPO received bids for 50.28 crore shares against the 8.86 crore shares offered, taking the overall subscription to 5.71 times.
The strongest demand came from qualified institutional buyers (QIBs), including large foreign and domestic funds. Their portion was subscribed 12.68 times.
The non-institutional investor (NII) category, which includes high-net-worth investors, was subscribed 6.55 times, while the retail portion was subscribed 1.39 times.
The IPO remained open from September 17 to September 21, giving investors five days to place their bids.

Brokerage firm sets ₹2,050 target for September 2027
Domestic brokerage firm MK Global Financial Services has given NSE shares a 'Buy' rating and set a target price of ₹2,050 for September 2027.
The target represents an upside of around 15% from the IPO issue price of ₹1,785.
The brokerage’s target comes after NSE’s public-market debut, as investors begin assessing the exchange’s business performance and growth prospects as a listed company.
Why NSE shares are trading on BSE
NSE has not listed its own shares on its trading platform. Investors are instead buying and selling NSE shares on the BSE.
This is because regulations governing recognised stock exchanges do not allow an exchange to list and trade its own shares on its own platform.
As a result, BSE is serving as the trading platform for NSE’s listed equity, allowing investors to trade the shares in the secondary market.
NSE operates far beyond stock trading
NSE’s business is not limited to providing a platform for buying and selling shares. Its operations cover equity, equity derivatives, currency derivatives, commodities, debt securities and several other market-related services.
Its wider business network also includes clearing and settlement, indices and market data-related operations.
The exchange has a large investor and listed-company base, underlining its position in India’s financial markets.
NSE has 26.14 crore registered investor accounts
As of June 30, 2026, NSE had 26.14 crore registered investor accounts and 3,005 companies listed on its platform.
During financial year 2026, NSE accounted for 92.99% of India’s total cash-market trading volume.
- Registered investor accounts: 26.14 crore
- Listed companies: 3,005
- FY2026 cash-market share: 92.99%
- NSE shares now trade on BSE
The listing gives investors direct access to shares of the exchange that operates one of the country’s largest securities markets. The stock’s movement after its ₹1,800 debut will now be closely tracked as NSE begins its journey as a publicly traded company.
