Mumbai.Open AI launched its new AI-powered web browser, Chat GPT Atlas, on Tuesday, October 21. The launch created significant market ripples, with Alphabet, Google’s parent company, seeing its share price drop sharply. This single-day fall resulted in a loss of 150 billion dollars, equivalent to around 13.15 lakh crore rupees, in Google’s market valuation.
Share prices show substantial decline after launch
Alphabet shares closed at 251.34 dollars, down 2.21 percent, while during the trading session, the stock hit a low of 244.67 dollars. Compared to the day’s high of 255.38 dollars, this represents a 4.19 percent decline. Currently, Alphabet’s market value stands at 3.03 trillion dollars, or roughly 265.93 lakh crore rupees, highlighting the impact of Open AI’s new product in investor circles.
Atlas integrates AI into every web page
Chat GPT Atlas is not an ordinary web browser. Built on Chromium technology similar to Google Chrome, it integrates Chat GPT directly into every web page. Users no longer need to switch tabs or copy and paste information to ask questions. The browser also features an agent mode, where AI can control the cursor and keyboard to perform complex tasks such as booking flights, researching products, or editing documents. Users can observe the AI performing tasks or leave it to complete work autonomously.
Currently available only for macOS users
At present, Atlas is available for macOS and for both Plus and Pro subscribers, though basic users can also try the browser for free. Open AI plans to launch mobile and Windows versions soon. CEO Sam Altman stated that they believe AI could completely transform web browsing. During the launch, engineers who previously worked on Chrome and Firefox were also present, emphasizing the technological experience behind Atlas.
Impact on Google’s advertising revenue model
The launch has created pressure on Google because a significant portion of its revenue comes from search advertising. AI-powered browsers like Chat GPT Atlas provide direct answers, potentially bypassing Google’s advertising-driven search model. Open AI already has around 800 million weekly Chat GPT users, many of whom could quickly adopt Atlas, creating further competitive pressure for Google.
Future developments in AI browser competition
In response, Google has integrated its Gemini AI into Chrome and recently avoided a court order that sought to separate its browser operations. Investors will be closely watching Google’s Q3 earnings on October 29 to assess if AI-powered browsers are affecting its core search business. The competition between Chat GPT Atlas and Google Chrome could bring major changes to the technology industry, with Open AI aiming to make browsing faster and smarter while Google works to maintain its dominance.
