Mumbai.Global beverage and snack giant PepsiCo is reportedly in talks to acquire a 10-15% stake in Haldiram Snacks Food, following interest from other contenders like Temasek and Alpha Wave Global. Discussions with the Agarwal family, owners of Haldiram, are ongoing but remain at an early stage, according to reports by the Times of India. Senior executives from PepsiCo’s New York headquarters recently initiated negotiations with the Agarwal family regarding the potential acquisition. However, these talks are still in their preliminary phase.
Previous Negotiations Without Conclusion
Before PepsiCo’s interest, Haldiram had explored stake sales with companies such as Mondelez, Kellogg’s, and Tata Consumer Products. However, those discussions concluded without any agreements. Similarly, earlier talks with PepsiCo’s former CEO Indra Nooyi had also failed to materialize.
Haldiram's Financial and Market Presence
Haldiram achieved a revenue of ₹12,800 crores in FY24, offering over 500 varieties of snacks, sweets, ready-to-eat products, and pre-mixed food items. The company’s valuation is estimated to be between ₹85,000 crores and ₹90,000 crores.
With a significant presence in international markets such as Singapore and the United States, Haldiram’s journey began in 1937 as a small shop. Over the years, it has grown to capture approximately 13% of India’s ₹6.2 billion snack market, as per Euromonitor International. The company also operates around 150 restaurants.
PepsiCo’s Interest in Traditional Snacks
PepsiCo leads the Western snacks market in India, holding a 24% share with products like chips and nachos. However, it has limited presence in the traditional Indian snacks segment, which includes items like namkeen, bhujia, and chana chaat. By collaborating with Haldiram, PepsiCo aims to strengthen its foothold in this growing category.
PepsiCo’s Past Acquisitions
PepsiCo has a history of acquisitions in the Indian snack industry. In 2000, it acquired Uncle Chipps from Amrit Agro Limited, integrating it into its Frito-Lay division. Uncle Chipps has since been positioned as a value brand, primarily targeting Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. In 2016-17, PepsiCo also launched Doritos nachos, expanding its portfolio in the Western snacks category.
Haldiram’s Global and Local Appeal
Haldiram's extensive product range and established presence in traditional Indian snacks make it an attractive partner for PepsiCo. If the deal materializes, it could not only diversify PepsiCo’s offerings but also position it more competitively in India’s dynamic snack market.
Future Outlook
As discussions progress, the collaboration between PepsiCo and Haldiram could reshape the snack market, combining global expertise with traditional Indian flavors. Whether this deal will succeed or follow previous failed negotiations remains to be seen.
