RBI announces KYC drive, claim rules and auto-investment feature for small investors and Jan Dhan holders

Mumbai. To mark 10 years of the Jan Dhan Yojana, the Reserve Bank of India has announced a special re-KYC campaign for account holders. Banks have been instructed to set up camps at Gram Panchayat levels from July 1 to September 30. These camps will help people update their KYC, open new bank accounts, and get information on government schemes such as Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana. This move is aimed at improving access and financial inclusion in rural areas.

Who needs to do re-KYC

Account holders who opened Jan Dhan accounts during 2014–2015 will be required to update their KYC. This is because the KYC validity for such accounts is for 10 years. Re-KYC is necessary to keep accounts active and secure. Banks will help link these accounts with valid documents to avoid misuse or fraud. RBI wants to ensure that old accounts remain functional and compliant with updated regulations.

Common rules for claim settlements

RBI has also introduced a uniform process for settling claims in case of deceased account holders. Currently, different banks follow different procedures, leading to confusion, delays, and hardship for family members. Under the new guideline, all banks will follow the same process with the same required documents. Whether it is a nominee, legal heir, or a family member, the procedure will be identical. This step is expected to simplify and speed up settlements across banks.

Auto-investment in government bonds

To encourage retail investment in government securities, RBI has made it easier for individuals to invest in treasury bills. The RBI’s Retail Direct portal will now include an auto-bidding feature. This will allow users to place automatic bids for both new and repeat investments in T-bills without having to do it manually each time. It is designed for investors who wish to invest regularly, saving them time and effort.

Changes announced after key RBI meeting

These changes were announced after the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting held from August 4 to 6. RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra addressed the media on August 6 and shared the details. The reforms are aimed at making banking services more accessible, efficient, and user-friendly, especially for rural and low-income populations.

Focus on transparency and ease of access

With these three major updates, RBI aims to enhance financial inclusion, reduce red tape, and increase convenience for the public. By bringing uniformity in rules, improving digital access to investments, and extending re-KYC outreach to villages, the central bank is taking steps toward a more inclusive financial ecosystem. These measures will also help the government monitor inactive accounts, secure transactions, and boost formal savings.
