Mumbai. The Reserve Bank of India has decided not to change the repo rate this time. It will remain steady at 5.5 percent. This means your loan interest rates and EMIs will stay the same. RBI had last reduced the rate by 0.50 percent in June, bringing it down to the current level. The latest decision was taken during the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting held between August 4 and 6. RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra shared the update on August 6.
All committee members agreed on status quo
Governor Malhotra stated that all members of the Monetary Policy Committee supported the decision to keep the repo rate unchanged. He said the committee made this choice because of uncertainties around tariffs. The repo rate is the rate at which RBI lends to commercial banks. Since there is no change, interest rates for borrowers will also remain unchanged for now.
Good monsoon, festive season bring optimism
According to the RBI Governor, the ongoing monsoon season is favorable, and the upcoming festive season usually brings a boost to the economy. These positive signs, along with supportive government and central bank policies, point towards steady economic growth. While challenges remain in global trade, geopolitical risks have slightly reduced, offering some relief to the overall economic environment.
Repo rate already cut three times in 2025
In 2025, the RBI has already cut the repo rate three times. In February, it reduced the rate from 6.5 percent to 6.25 percent. In April, there was another cut of 0.25 percent. Then, in June, the rate was cut by 0.50 percent, bringing it to 5.5 percent. These three cuts have reduced the repo rate by a total of 1 percent this year.
Why RBI changes the repo rate
The central bank uses the repo rate as a tool to manage inflation and economic growth. When inflation is high, RBI increases the rate to reduce money flow in the market. Higher rates make borrowing costlier, which helps bring down demand and inflation. On the other hand, when the economy is weak, RBI lowers the rate to make borrowing cheaper and boost growth through more money in circulation.
Market stability expected after the move
Real estate expert Aman Trehan from Trehan Iris welcomed the RBI decision. He said keeping the repo rate stable will bring confidence and consistency to the market. It will also encourage large investments. The maintained GDP growth forecast of 6.5 percent for 2025–26 is a positive sign for the real estate sector and other capital-intensive industries looking for growth opportunities.
