Mumbai. The Indian automobile market continued to defy global uncertainty, posting its strongest-ever retail sales performance in May despite the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran. According to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), retail vehicle sales across the country touched a record 25,31,067 units during the month, reflecting a growth of 9.55% compared with 23,10,451 units sold in May last year.

The figures underline the resilience of consumer demand, even as concerns over rising fuel prices and geopolitical tensions weigh on global markets. Dealers said changing consumer preferences and growing acceptance of fuel-efficient vehicles played a key role in driving sales.

Shift towards electric and efficient vehicles

One of the biggest highlights of May sales was the growing dominance of electric vehicles. For the first time, EVs accounted for more than 11% of total vehicle sales in the country. Industry observers attribute this shift largely to higher fuel costs triggered by the Middle East crisis, which has pushed many buyers to explore economical mobility options.

From two-wheelers to passenger vehicles and commercial fleets, customers are increasingly choosing vehicles that offer lower running costs and better fuel efficiency. Dealers reported a noticeable rise in enquiries for electric and hybrid vehicles, indicating that consumer behaviour is gradually changing in response to fuel price volatility.

Passenger vehicle segment records strongest growth

Passenger vehicles emerged as the best-performing category during the month. FADA data showed retail sales of cars and utility vehicles surged 23.25% year-on-year to a record 4,02,591 units. In comparison, the segment had recorded sales of 3,26,656 units in May 2025. The sharp increase reflects strong consumer confidence, improved model availability and sustained demand in both urban and semi-urban markets.

Key highlights from May sales:

  • Total vehicle sales rose 9.55% to 25,31,067 units.
  • Passenger vehicle sales jumped 23.25%.
  • EV share crossed 11% for the first time.
  • Consumer interest in hybrid vehicles also increased.

Two-wheeler market sees steady expansion

The two-wheeler segment, which remains the backbone of India’s mobility market, also registered healthy growth. Retail sales increased 7.54% to 18,44,947 units during May. More importantly, the electric two-wheeler segment continued to gain traction. EV penetration in the category climbed to 9.25%, up significantly from 6.11% recorded a year ago. Dealers said rising fuel expenses encouraged many first-time buyers as well as existing vehicle owners to evaluate electric alternatives. Improved charging infrastructure and wider product choices have further strengthened consumer confidence in the segment.

Commercial and three-wheeler sales remain positive

The commercial vehicle and three-wheeler categories also contributed positively to the overall market performance. Three-wheeler retail sales increased 3.56% to 1,11,526 units, compared with 1,07,688 units sold in the corresponding month last year. Commercial vehicles, including trucks and other heavy-duty vehicles, registered a growth of 5.29%, reaching a record 83,823 units. The increase suggests continued economic activity and transportation demand across sectors despite global uncertainties and elevated operating costs.

Construction equipment segment faces pressure

While most vehicle categories reported growth, construction equipment witnessed a decline. Sales of wheeled construction machinery fell 17.51% compared with the previous year. Industry experts attributed the drop mainly to a high base effect, as sales had been exceptionally strong during the corresponding period last year.

Important takeaways:

  • Rising fuel prices are reshaping buyer preferences.
  • EV adoption is expanding across vehicle categories.
  • Passenger vehicles remain the strongest growth driver.
  • Commercial vehicle demand continues to stay healthy.
  • Construction equipment sales face pressure from a high base effect.

The May sales figures indicate that India’s automobile market remains on a strong growth path, with electric mobility steadily moving from a niche segment to a mainstream choice. As fuel costs remain uncertain and consumers focus more on long-term savings, the momentum behind EVs and fuel-efficient vehicles is expected to strengthen further in the coming months.
