Mumbai.India’s largest public sector bank, the State Bank of India (SBI), reported a total income of ₹1.44 lakh crore in the January–March quarter of FY24-25. This marks a 12.04% year-on-year (YoY) increase from ₹1.28 lakh crore in the same period last year. Compared to the previous quarter, income also rose by 11.99%. However, despite this robust income growth, the bank’s net profit for the quarter dropped 10% YoY to ₹18,643 crore. The decline didn’t deter the bank from rewarding shareholders with a substantial dividend.
Dividend of ₹15.90 Per Share Announced
SBI announced a dividend of ₹15.90 per share along with its Q4 earnings on Saturday. The announcement reflects the bank’s stable financial standing and its commitment to delivering value to shareholders despite the slight decline in net profit. The consistent income and a moderate increase in interest earnings have enabled the bank to declare this payout.
Net Interest Income Shows Steady Growth
SBI’s Net Interest Income (NII) for Q4 rose 8% YoY to ₹1,19,666 crore, compared to ₹1,11,043 crore in the same quarter last year. On a sequential basis, it also showed a 2% increase from ₹1,17,427 crore recorded in the October–December quarter. This steady rise in NII highlights the bank’s resilience and effective asset-liability management in a fluctuating interest rate environment.
Understanding Standalone vs Consolidated Results
The financial figures released are on a standalone basis, meaning they reflect the performance of SBI’s core banking operations alone. A consolidated report, on the other hand, would include the financial results of all subsidiaries and joint ventures. Investors and analysts closely monitor both sets of results to gauge overall health and operational efficiency.
NPA and Asset Quality Context Explained
Loans or advances that are not repaid within 90 days are classified as Non-Performing Assets (NPAs). These represent funds from which the bank is currently not earning any return. While SBI has not disclosed specific NPA figures in this release, asset quality remains a key metric for gauging financial stability in the banking sector.
SBI Shares Show Volatile Returns This Year
SBI released its Q4 earnings on May 3, 2025. A day earlier, on May 2, its stock closed 1.41% higher at ₹799.80. However, the stock has delivered mixed returns over different time frames—up 2.64% in one month, nearly flat since the beginning of the year (0.83%), but down 3.62% in six months and 3.81% over the past year. With a market capitalization of ₹7.13 lakh crore, SBI remains a financial giant in India’s banking landscape.
