Mumbai.Swiggy's quick commerce platform Instamart has entered the LPG delivery segment through a partnership with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), allowing customers to order gas cylinders on demand through the app. The service, launched on July 15, will initially begin in Bengaluru, where eligible users are expected to receive LPG cylinders within 30 to 45 minutes. The collaboration marks India's first quick commerce partnership for LPG cylinder delivery and reflects the growing push to bring essential household services onto digital platforms.
Gas Delivery Enters Quick Commerce Era
The pilot service will allow customers to order two HPCL LPG cylinder variants directly through the Instamart app. These include the recently launched 10-kg HP Navya composite LPG cylinder and the traditional 5-kg metal LPG cylinder. Unlike regular domestic LPG connections, customers will not need an existing household gas connection to place their first order, making the service especially useful for people relocating to a new city, students, working professionals and those requiring an emergency cooking gas solution.
Key highlights of the new service include:
- Delivery expected within 30-45 minutes in Bengaluru.
- Customers can order 10-kg HP Navya and 5-kg LPG cylinders.
- No prior domestic LPG connection required for first-time purchase.
- Service currently available only as a pilot project in Bengaluru.
How First Purchase and Refills Will Work
HPCL clarified that the cylinders supplied through Instamart will remain entirely HPCL products, while Instamart will function only as the technology-enabled ordering platform. Customers placing their first order will undergo identity verification and complete the required delivery documentation. For refill orders, customers will have to hand over their empty HPCL cylinder to the authorised delivery executive at the time of receiving the new one.
The companies have not yet disclosed the final pricing of either cylinder or any delivery and convenience charges. The cylinder price will continue to follow government-approved rates and HPCL's existing pricing structure, while any additional quick delivery fee will be displayed on the Instamart app during checkout.
Safety Standards to Remain Unchanged
Both companies stressed that customer safety will remain the highest priority despite the rapid delivery model. LPG cylinders will not be delivered by regular Swiggy riders. Instead, deliveries will be handled exclusively by HPCL's authorised distributors and trained personnel, who will follow all applicable safety and regulatory norms.
According to the companies:
- HPCL retains complete ownership of the LPG cylinders.
- Only trained HPCL delivery staff will transport cylinders.
- Safety and regulatory protocols will remain unchanged.
- Instamart's role is limited to digital ordering and customer interface.
Pilot Could Reshape India's LPG Delivery Market
HPCL Marketing Director Amit Garg said the partnership reflects changing consumer expectations, with customers increasingly seeking instant access to everyday essentials. He said the digital platform would help HPCL reach younger consumers, tech-savvy users and people moving frequently between cities while maintaining the company's established standards of safety and reliability.
For Instamart, the partnership represents an expansion beyond groceries into high-trust household services. The platform already operates in more than 131 cities and delivers over 50,000 products. Although the companies have not announced a timeline for expanding LPG delivery beyond Bengaluru, industry observers believe a successful pilot could encourage other public sector and private LPG suppliers to explore similar tie-ups with quick commerce platforms.
What to watch next:
- Expansion beyond Bengaluru has not yet been announced.
- Pricing and convenience charges will be revealed during booking.
- Success of the pilot may influence other LPG companies to adopt similar quick commerce models.
- The initiative could redefine how essential household fuel is delivered in India's rapidly growing digital commerce market.
Composite Cylinders Offer Modern Alternative
The launch also introduces more consumers to HPCL's HP Navya composite LPG cylinder, which is significantly lighter than conventional steel cylinders. Made from multi-layer fibreglass material, composite cylinders are corrosion-resistant, reduce the risk associated with rust, and offer a modern appearance suitable for urban households.
