Mumbai. With just a week left for the presentation of the Union Budget 2024-25, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is set to unveil it on February 1. Ahead of this, the traditional Halwa Ceremony, symbolizing the final stages of budget preparation, will be held today at 5 PM at the North Block under Sitharaman’s leadership. Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary and other senior officials will also attend the event.

According to a report by News18, this year’s budget is expected to bring significant relief for the middle class, with major announcements for the infrastructure and MSME sectors. Sources suggest that the government is considering tax benefits for individuals earning between ₹10 lakh and ₹15 lakh annually. This move aims to enhance their disposable income, boosting economic activities and alleviating financial burdens.

Focus on Infrastructure and MSME Sectors

The upcoming budget is expected to prioritize the infrastructure sector with special attention to MSMEs (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises). Reports indicate that industries like hospitality, manufacturing, and real estate may receive incentives and tax relief. The government is planning robust growth in infrastructure, with investments directed toward railways, roads, urban development, and electricity.

Additionally, the MSME sector is likely to receive targeted incentives to create employment opportunities and strengthen small industries. These measures are expected to generate new jobs and provide much-needed support to small-scale entrepreneurs.

Special Focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Recognizing concerns over job displacement due to the growing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the government may announce specific initiatives to help Indian companies compete on a global scale. These plans aim to prepare Indian businesses to leverage AI effectively while addressing workforce concerns.

Comparison with UPA Era Growth

Government sources have compared economic progress during the UPA regime with the current administration. For instance, the average monthly per capita consumption expenditure in 2011-12 was ₹1,430. In 2023-24, this figure rose to ₹4,122 in rural areas and ₹6,996 in urban areas. The upcoming budget is expected to further accelerate this growth trajectory, focusing on sustainable development and economic empowerment.

Middle-Class Tax Benefits and Economic Growth

The proposed tax relief for those earning up to ₹15 lakh annually is likely to strengthen the purchasing power of the middle class, fostering increased consumer spending. This, in turn, is expected to drive economic growth by stimulating demand across various sectors. As the government gears up to unveil its last full budget before the general elections, all eyes are on the Finance Minister to deliver a balanced plan that addresses the needs of the middle class, boosts infrastructure development, and promotes MSME growth, while also setting a foundation for future economic stability.
