Mumbai. From October 8, UPI users may be able to make payments using their face or fingerprint instead of entering a PIN. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which operates the UPI system, has completed preparations to approve these biometric features. Once approved, the PIN requirement for payments will become optional, making transactions faster and easier for users.
How biometric authentication will work on UPI apps
The new system will allow users to choose between entering their PIN or using biometric authentication during payments. When a user initiates a UPI transaction, the app will give the option to scan their fingerprint or verify their face using the phone’s sensor. This is similar to unlocking a smartphone using face recognition or fingerprint, making payments more convenient and secure.
Security features behind the new biometric payments
Biometric data for the new UPI feature will be directly linked to the government’s Aadhaar system. Each transaction will be cross-checked against the unique biometric information registered with Aadhaar. This connection ensures that payments are highly secure, as the data cannot easily be copied or misused. Experts say this system reduces the risk of fraud compared to using PINs.
Reason for introducing biometric authentication in UPI
The biometric option aims to reduce fraud and make digital payments more accessible, especially in rural areas. Many people in these regions have smartphones but find it difficult to remember or type PINs. With face or fingerprint verification, digital payments are expected to grow significantly in remote areas, supporting financial inclusion.
Launch plan and demonstration at fintech festival
NPCI plans to showcase the new biometric UPI feature at the Global Fintech Festival in Mumbai. The official launch could take place on October 8. This will give the public and fintech companies a first look at how the system works and its security measures.
Availability across major UPI apps for smooth adoption
Almost all UPI apps are expected to support this feature. Initially, leading apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm are likely to implement the biometric authentication, allowing users to experience secure and fast transactions immediately.
Pointers in a nutshell:
1. UPI payments may soon allow face and fingerprint authentication.
2. NPCI has approved biometric features for easier transactions.
3. Users can choose PIN or biometric authentication during payments.
4. Biometric data will be verified with Aadhaar for security.
5. Fraud risk is lower compared to traditional PIN-based payments.
6. Launch planned on October 8 at Global Fintech Festival.
7. Major UPI apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm will support it initially.
