Mumbai.Alcohol consumption in the United States is witnessing a clear decline, with a direct impact on the restaurant industry’s earnings. A 2025 Gallup poll shows that the share of Americans who drink alcohol has dropped to one of its lowest levels, with only 54 percent respondents saying they consume alcohol. Even among those who drink, the frequency and quantity have reduced significantly. Experts attribute this shift largely to growing health concerns and the rising cost of alcoholic beverages.
Restaurant operators report sharp decline in alcohol sales
The fall in alcohol consumption is reflecting sharply in business numbers. In 2025, nearly 31 percent of American restaurant operators reported a serious decline in alcohol sales. Damon Wise, who runs a restaurant in Montclair, New Jersey, described how his revenue model has changed over time. Earlier, his earnings were split as 40 percent from food and 60 percent from alcohol. This later became an even 50-50 split, but now nearly 70 percent of revenue comes from food, with only 30 percent contributed by alcohol sales.
Millennials cut back while Gen Z stays away
Changing generational habits are playing a key role in this shift. According to the Technomic 2026 report, millennials aged between 31 and 45 years, once considered heavy drinkers, are now reducing alcohol intake. Meanwhile, Gen Z consumers are not compensating for this decline. They are often seen limiting themselves to a single drink during outings, focusing more on social experiences like photography rather than consumption.
Key behavioural and spending trends include:
- Millennials moving away from regular drinking habits
- Gen Z opting for minimal or occasional consumption
- Increased preference for alternative social activities
- Reduced willingness to spend on alcohol
Health awareness and medications influence drinking habits
Health concerns have further accelerated this trend. A January 2025 report by US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy linked even light to moderate alcohol consumption with cancer risks, influencing public perception. Alongside this, lifestyle changes and rising health awareness are discouraging alcohol use. Another notable factor is the growing use of GLP-1 medications, currently used by nearly 6 percent of Americans, which are believed to reduce cravings for alcohol.
Key health-related factors impacting consumption:
- Rising awareness about long-term health risks
- Medical studies linking alcohol to serious illnesses
- Increased adoption of healthier lifestyles
- GLP-1 drugs reducing alcohol cravings
Rising prices and unemployment hit young consumers
Economic pressures are also discouraging alcohol consumption, especially among younger consumers. Dustin Lancaster, a businessman based in Los Angeles, noted that rising costs have made alcohol less accessible. A drink that once cost around 8 dollars, approximately 730 rupees, now costs up to 20 dollars, nearly 1,800 rupees. This sharp increase is making young consumers reconsider their spending priorities.
