Mumbai. The belief that only the poor or middle class pawn valuables in times of need does not hold true anymore. Even the ultra-wealthy are increasingly turning to their luxury possessions to raise quick cash. High-value items such as rare Rolex watches, Birkin bags, diamonds, luxury cars, and even multi-million-dollar art collections are being pledged to secure short-term loans.
Banks, traditionally, offer loans against financial portfolios or real estate, but the process is often slow and documentation-heavy. In contrast, lenders specialising in luxury assets provide a far quicker and simpler alternative, with minimal paperwork and faster approvals.
Fast loans with high confidentiality
These lenders operate with a level of discretion that rivals, and often exceeds, traditional private banking standards. Loans are typically approved within hours, making them attractive to high-net-worth individuals who need immediate liquidity.
Dewey Burke, Founder and CEO of Luxury Asset Capital in Denver, says his firm has disbursed over $1 billion in loans over the past decade. The company’s loan book has grown nearly 25 times during this period. Most loans against luxury items range between Rs 15 lakh and Rs 18 lakh.
Why wealthy borrowers prefer this route
- Quick access to cash without lengthy bank approvals
- Minimal documentation and faster processing
- High levels of privacy and discretion
- Ability to retain ownership if loans are repaid on time
This model is particularly useful for those who prefer not to liquidate long-term investments or disturb structured portfolios.
Unlocking idle wealth for liquidity
Many borrowers see this as a way to monetise assets that would otherwise remain locked away. One client secured a loan of about Rs 28 lakh by pledging a Hermès Mini Birkin bag, paying roughly 10 percent interest. She said the loan helped her navigate a difficult phase.
Another borrower noted that instead of letting valuable assets sit idle, leveraging them for liquidity makes financial sense.
- Loans typically cover 40 percent to 65 percent of asset value
- Items pledged include watches, handbags, jewellery, cars, and art
- Short tenure loans usually range from 0 to 120 days
High interest but short duration
Interest rates can be steep, reaching up to 5 percent per month, or nearly 60 percent annually. However, since most loans are short-term, the overall interest burden remains manageable for borrowers.
Risk of default and asset loss
If the borrower fails to repay within the agreed period, the lender retains ownership of the pledged asset and may sell it to recover dues. This makes timely repayment critical despite the convenience offered by such loans.
- Default leads to permanent loss of asset
- Lenders recover dues through resale
- High-value items ensure quick liquidation in secondary markets
