Zomato launches new Healthy Mode to focus on nutrition alongside taste

Winning Bizness Desk

Mumbai.Zomato, the online food delivery platform, has introduced a new feature called Healthy Mode on its app. The announcement was made by Zomato founder Deepinder Goyal through a post on social media platform X. This feature is currently live only for users in Gurugram, with plans to expand it to other cities soon.

Every dish will now show a health score

Deepinder Goyal explained that for years, Zomato made it easy for people to order food outside or at home but did not help them choose truly nutritious meals. While users could find salads or smoothie bowls, finding food that was genuinely healthy was not simple. Healthy Mode addresses this gap by providing a health score for each dish, ranging from low to super. The score considers more than just calories, including protein, complex carbs, fiber, and micronutrients. AI and restaurant data work behind the scenes, but users will clearly see why a dish is healthy and what makes it special.

Professional athletes can trust the feature

Healthy Mode is designed to meet high standards, suitable even for professional athletes. Deepinder Goyal described it as a personal step for him, addressing a long-standing concern that while Zomato satisfied cravings, it did not fully support the nutritional needs of users. This feature is the first concrete step in correcting that, currently available in Gurugram and soon to be launched in more locations. Users are encouraged to try it, provide feedback, and help improve it.

Zomato partners with MakeMyTrip for train deliveries

In addition to the Healthy Mode, Zomato recently partnered with travel booking platform MakeMyTrip to deliver food directly to passengers’ seats on trains. Available at more than 130 stations, this service allows travelers booking tickets on MakeMyTrip to order from over 40,000 restaurants listed on Zomato.

Zomato posts strong revenue but sharp profit drop

Zomato reported a total income of 7,521 crore rupees in the first quarter of FY 2025-26, a 69.31 percent increase from last year. After deducting expenses such as salaries and taxes, the consolidated net profit stood at 25 crore rupees, reflecting a 90 percent drop compared to the same quarter last year when the profit was 253 crore rupees. Operational revenue grew 70.39 percent to 7,167 crore rupees, up from 4,206 crore rupees in Q1FY25.

Zomato’s journey from FoodieBay to unicorn status

Deepinder Goyal and Pankaj Chaddha started FoodieBay in 2008 as a food directory website. Within nine months, it became the largest restaurant directory in Delhi NCR. In 2010, it was rebranded as Zomato and expanded to Pune, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad. By 2012, Zomato began international expansion to Sri Lanka, UAE, Qatar, South Africa, UK, and the Philippines, followed by New Zealand, Turkey, and Brazil in 2013. Today, Zomato is India’s first food-tech unicorn, with a valuation exceeding one billion dollars. Beyond food delivery, the platform also acquired Blinkit in August 2022 to enter grocery delivery.
